The big voting day is almost upon us. Tomorrow, Bengaluru will go to polls and we will decide whose hands to leave the fate of the city in.

For the past month, Citizen Matters has been covering the BBMP Elections 2015 with much fervour. We hope this helps you with your decision before you cast your vote.

On the last day of campaigning, we wanted to get some ground coverage, beyond the facts. From being offered cash for coverage, to hearing how voters are taking to candidates, it truly was an eye opener. Read: On the trail of the great Bengaluru election tamasha!

In other news…

In our excitement to present you with the best possible coverage of the BBMP elections, we may have neglected our regular reporting a wee bit. We assure you that we will be back to our usual coverage of all that’s happening in Bengaluru as soon as we have that little dot of ink on our fingers. Here’s what else happened around the city:

The state is facing severe power-crunch due to lack of monsoons, as 30% of electricity is produced from hydro-electric power. What the press note from the Power Ministry does not call out is this: Brace yourself for power cuts. Read: Here’s why Bengaluru will have to face power cuts sooner or later.

BMTC bags the National Public Transport Excellence Award for maintaining cleanliness at depots and bus stands. MD Ekroop Caur received the award from Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari at a ceremony in New Delhi. Read: Accolades for BMTC.

Rupa Chanda, an Economics professor from IIMB has been chosen to be a part of WHO’s team of world experts who will suggest ways of strengthening global health security. Read: Bengaluru professor on WHO health panel.

Harshvardhan Sanghi, a student of Greenwood High International School, lives close to one of Bengaluru’s large, polluted lakes. Eager to help the ongoing efforts to get the authorities and the community to do something for the lake, Harshvardhan made a short film. See: A school boy’s documentary on Varthur lake.

The week that was

  • According to the National Crime Records Bureau, Bengaluru has recorded the highest number of cyber crime cases in 2014. It registered 675 cases in the last year, followed by Hyderabad with 384 cases.
  • Community group Indira Nagar Rising has initiated the ‘Namma Bengaluru, Namma Mara’ campaign to save 447 trees in Indira Nagar. Under the campaign, citizens can also adopt trees to protect them.
  • Two labourers who entered a manhole to clean it, have died of suffocation near the house of Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya. The two were manual scavengers.
  • Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has changed the default language of its official website from English to Kannada. The development has taken place reportedly, as a result of criticism from pro-Kannada groups.
  • In a dramatic incident, an undertrial, Vishwanath alias Vishwa who was admitted at NIMHANS, went on a firing spree at the hospital premises on Sunday. He was later shot dead by commandos from the Garuda team.

Events this week

  • Jumpstart, India’s only gathering for children’s content creators is happening this weekend. Head over to Goethe Institut on August 21st and 22nd and Get Storyfied!
  • Make your way to UB City for Art Bangalore, a festival that celebrates art in its myriad forms. The theme for this year is Paradigm Shift and the festival will be on till August 30th.
  • Watch the play That Night, a psychological thriller on dissociative identity disorder. It is being staged at Alliance Francaise on August 21st and at Atta Galatta on August 29th.
  • If you are a cinema buff, the Israeli Film Festival is a must-attend. A total of nine films are being screened across Bangalore International Centre, Suchitra Film Society and Alliance Francaise until August 27th.
  • If you find yourself near the Richmond Circle flyover on August 21st, be sure to participate in We Make the City, a performance and parade celebrating our metropolis.
  • Architects Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha are anchoring The Inheritance of Rain, a talk on Bengaluru’s water needs and history at Goethe Institut on August 22nd.  
  • Treat yourself to some typical South Indian tiffin at the Basavangudi Food Walk on August 23rd.
