As soon as I read that Bangalore was hosting the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation's (IWAS) biennial event, I decided that I would definitely see these remarkable people whom I have viewed a bit on the telly. Although I attended only the colourful and slightly chaotic opening ceremony and also witnessed some of the confusion prevalent among the organizers, I felt enriched and elated! When I asked Mr. David Premnath, the event's Technical Director about the motivation behind bringing the games to India he promptly replied, "We wanted to create awareness about these games, here." However, despite the occasion's specialty,…

People running for a cause is quite common in Bangalore. But, this event was a little different. Sunday October 25th saw a misty, breezy morning. It was 7.30 AM, when most Bengaloreans were sleeping there were almost 80 women of all ages, assembled at the start of the run trail in Bellandur, in the outskirts of Bengaluru. This was the first "Girls on the Run" event in Bangalore, organised by RunnerGirlsIndia (RGI), a group dedicated to empowering women toward a healthy lifestyle, promoting personal fitness, increasing physical activity and emotional health. The run, as the organisers said, was meant to…

The second in league should be Tennis with talks about Sania Mirza's engagement party or rift between two senior players. I have run a full marathon and a couple of half marathons but I never really enjoyed running. I did it more as a chore, somewhat like eating healthy food and doing laundry. That is until I started running with Asha, an NGO working on children's education in Bangalore. Initially it started with a curiosity as to what drove Santhosh Padmanabhan, an Asha volunteer and marathon runner in Bangalore to do a 24 hour/156 km non-stop run. I learnt that it was a fund raising activity for education related causes. Padmanabhan, a software engineer, spends innumerable hours in education related…
