Mumbai N-W candidates: Son of the soil, former Mumbai North MP and UP MLA seek votes from diverse base

Mumbai North West constituency has a large voter base of diverse demography. As Mumbai goes to the polls, incumbent Shiv Sena MP and four-time MLA Gajanan Kirtikar takes on former MP (Mumbai North constituency) Sanjay Nirupam, and the sitting MLA (SP) of UP's Saidpur Assembly constituency. Mumbai North West constituency is comprised of six assembly constituencies- Jogeshwari East, Dindoshi, Goregaon, Varsova, Andheri West, Andheri East.The constituency has diverse demographics having, in addition to the large base of Marathi voters, over 3.5 lakh North Indian voters and 1.2 lakh South Indian voters. Over 3 lakh Muslim voters also make for a a strong presence in the constituency.

The Election Commission of India( ECI) has accepted the nominations of 21 candidates representing various political parties or standing independently.While one candidate has withdrawn his candidacy, the body has rejected 5 applications.

Sanjay Nirupam (INC)

Nirupam is a former MP from the Mumbai North constituency where he had won in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. He competed in the 2014 elections from the same constituency but lost to Gopal Chinnaya of the BJP. Prior to joining the Indian National Congress, he was a two time Rajya Sabha MP representing Shiv Sena in 1996 and 2000. He contested the Mumbai North West constituency in 2004 representing Shiv Sena, but wasn’t successful.

Issues in the Constituency 

A survey in 2018 titled A Survey on Governance Issues and Voting Behaviour by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found residents of Mumbai North West to have stated employment opportunities (50.05%), traffic congestion(42.25%), water and air pollution (39.22 %) as the three most pressing issues in the constituency.

The proposed construction of a car shed for Metro Phase 3 across 165 hectares of plot in Aarey Milk colony(in Goregaon)which will involve the felling of over 2000 trees has met a strong backlash from citizens. Over 33,000 suggestion and objections were submitted by citizens against this move by Brihamumbai Municipal Corporation.
