Meet TR Baalu, MP-elect from Sriperumbudur

DMK's Principal Secretary TR Baalu has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Sriperumbudur constituency for the fifth time. He defeated PMK's A. Vaithilingam.

Sriperumbudur election results on May 23 saw the DMK’s TR Baalu emerge the winner. He beat his nearest rivals Vaithilingam A (PMK) and Sridhar M (MNM) with a comfortable margin.

Sriperumbudur is one of the largest parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu. It is a manufacturing hub and is home to many automobile production units. Sriperumbudur parliamentary constituency consists of Maduravoyal, Ambattur, Alandur, Sriperumbudur(SC), Pallavaram and Tambaram assembly constituencies.

According to the Election Commission of India’s website, the constituency has a total of  2253041 voters. The constituency went to polls on April 18, 2019, in the second phase of the 17th Lok Sabha elections. Sriperumbudur registered 60.39% voter turnout.

Background

DMK’s Principal Secretary, T. R. Baalu has been elected five times to the Lok Sabha since 1996. He was first elected to Parliament as a member of Rajya Sabha in 1986. Baalu, who has served as a minister in H D Deve Gowda, I K Gujral, A B Vajpayee and Dr Manmohan Singh governments, had held various portfolios including the high-profile highways and shipping ministries.

Promises for the constituency

The election manifesto of TR Baalu.

TR Baalu has promised to take necessary efforts to boost the industrial growth in the constituency and to provide a wide range of employment opportunities in the country with special focus on Tamil Nadu. “I can assure you that local issues will be addressed effectively by me, to the fullest satisfaction of the people of the constituency,” said TR Baalu.

Baalu also promised to take necessary actions in the next five years to complete the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project, which he described as “the dream of Tamil people for the past 150 years”. He also promised to control traffic issues which people have been facing for a very long period of time.
