City: Bengaluru

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is facing the public ire on the integration of Metro stations with other modes of transport. But this is not the only issue troubling the city's fastest public transport provider. It is that time of the year again. Of Devi puja, and bombe habba. Of Garbha and Sindhoor Khela. Of celebration and food. I was a 11-year-old in the steel city of Vizag when I first experienced Durga Puja celebrated the Bengali way. For a Kannada / Tamizh speaking girl used to dolls being arranged in homes during Navaratri (and being prodded in the back to sing a carnatic song while visiting others’ homes for Golu), the community celebration of Durga Puja was a revelation. During the next few years of my stay there, my friends and I learnt to…

Following the heavy floods in parts of Bengaluru last monsoon, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) took up the task of stormwater drain (SWD) encroachment clearance drive in August, 2016. It has been a year - the drive started in all earnestness but soon got stuck, because of interventions by affected parties and courts. But waste collection is yet to resume in many parts of the city, with piles of mixed waste lying on roadside. What causes this situation? Even after having court-monitored processes to set the system in place, why are we still suffering? Where does the rot lie? The answer: it lies in the system itself. The current waste management system is designed…

The third week of August ended with a wildlife event and a wildlife/conservation festival, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. The first was the screening of "Cobra King", a documentary on the King Cobra made by Sandesh Kadur of Felis Creations It was Gowrishankar of Kalinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology narrating the life cycle of this iconic reptile of the Western Ghats. I cannot yet find the documentary on the net ( has it not yet been released to the wild, like rescued snakes are...?), but here is another video on the same snake from the same film maker: Here's…
