Have you seen a biogas plant in your neighbourhood?

Here is BBMP's list of biomethanisation plants across Bengaluru. See where BBMP plans to process wet waste in your neighbourhood.

In an effort to tackle the waste management crisis that Bangalore is buckling under, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has considered dealing with organic waste by converting it into biogas.  BBMP has plans to setup 16 biomethanation plants across the city, some of which are complete and some in progress. The contracts have been awarded to Mailhem Engineers for four plants and to Ashoka Biogreen for 12 plants.

On 22-Jun-2014, the biomethanation plant  at KR Market was inaugurated. According to reports, Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana said the plant would convert biodegradable waste into energy, and could process five tonnes of wet waste a day. He also stated that there were plans to set up similar plants in several locations across the city and that the plants in Yelahanka, Mathikere and Jayanagar were almost ready. These plants will serve to reduce the wet waste that is currently making its way to the landfill. Furthermore the power generated by these plants will be used locally for lighting purposes

BBMP filed the following submission in Writ Petition 24739.2012, Kavitha Shankar vs. State of Karnataka, before the Honourable High Court of Karnataka. This is the list of bio-methanisation plants (for generation of energy from bio-degradable waste of 5 MTPD) setup or planned to be setup in the various wards, in Bangalore.

Share your observations related to your neighbourhood, in the Comments thread below — where the plant is, if you have seen it functioning etc. Mention the ward; if you do not know the ward names, check the map to see which is the closest plant.
