Meet Thiruvallur candidates: Two-time AIADMK MP faces another doctor fielded by MNM

Thiruvallur Parliamentary constituency is comprised of six assembly constituencies — Madhavaram, Poonamalle, Avadi, Ponneri, Gummidipoondi and Thiruvallur. Once part of the Sriperumbudur constituency, Thiruvallur was carved out as a separate constituency in 2008 after delimitation.

A total of 20 candidates are contesting from various political parties and as independent candidates from Chennai South. The Election Commission of India has rejected 17 applications for the constituency, while two of them withdrew after filing the nominations.  According to the election commission of India’s website, the constituency has a total of 1946242 voters: 961864 male, 984032 female and 346 transgenders.

Thiruvallur shares its border with Andhra Pradesh, the reason for a sizeable Telugu population in the constituency.  With a mix of urban and rural localities, Thiruvallur has an average literacy rate of 83 percent.

Key issues of the constituency

  • Due to increasing industrialisation, farmlands are fast vanishing. Out of the total 3,42,243 hectares in Tiruvallur, 35 per cent comes under cultivated area, reports The New Indian Express.
  • Due to various inter-departmental reasons, Ponneri Smart city project has not commenced yet. The project is vital for infrastructural development in the constituency, which still has mud roads.
  • Water is sourced from the agricultural wells of Thiruvallur to quench the thirst of Chennai. However, this has resulted in depleting groundwater levels.
  • The constituency, with around 20 lakh population, has no central or state run medical college. “Lack of good educational institutions is a key reason behind youth migration from the constituency. More and more youngsters are migrating to bordering Andhra Pradesh in search of better fortunes. The core city of Chennai manages to get the spotlight for setting up the reputed educational institutions,” says Kumaravelu J, a resident of Ponneri.
  • The number of trains from Ponneri and Gummidipoondi to Chennai Central need to be increased. “There is only one train for every one hour. During non peak hours, trains come only once every two hours,” Kumaravelu pointed out.

How a student app to connect with share autos can help commuters in Chennai

A team from St. Joseph's Institute of Technology and IIT Madras makes commuting easy for Chennai residents through their innovative app.

Crowded buses, with passengers jostling for space, are common on Chennai's roads. The city has many public transport users, including college students and people commuting daily for work. Share autos play a crucial role in providing last-mile connectivity, helping passengers travel from bus stops and MRTS stations to their final destinations. These share autos fill the gap by making multiple stops between bus stations, schools, colleges, and other key locations. However, the share auto system has its shortcomings, the most notable being that it is unreliable. Share auto drivers often decide daily whether to stop at a specific location. If…
