With all the traffic around it is easy to miss Star Briyani near Silk Board junction. But once you step inside the food will definitely catch your attention. The menu seems too short. But the taste more than makes up for the length of the menu. They have only three types of briyani – chicken, mutton and egg. In fry or kebab we were left with limited chicken, mutton and fish items.
Ambur Briyani has a royal legacy. It is said to have evolved from Arcot briyani, from the kingdom of Nawab of Arcots. Ambur is a small little town in Tamil Nadu. A rice variety from Tamil Nadu, Seeraga Samba, is used instead of the usual Basmati.
What enhances the flavour though is the fact that the meat and rice is half-cooked separately and later the mixture is put in a vessel, sealed with a vessel and hot coals is put atop the lid to ensure even cooking.
We ordered one chicken briyani and one mutton briyani along with a boneless chicken kebab. The briyani was served in traditional style on a banana leaf with an accompaniment of onion raita and brinjal curry.
The rice was rice well cooked yet light and fluffy. The chicken and mutton pieces were juicy and succulent. The taste of ginger, garlic, onions, tomato, mint leaves, cloves, cinnamon, chilli, curd, coriander leaves and lime which were used for preparation of the briyani was mixed well, and the taste and aroma came out perfectly.
Boneless chicken kebab was tender with a hint of chilli and pepper. Though fried it wasn’t greasy. The quantity seemed less and it was the only disappointment.
The briyani and kebabs may be easily found in most restaurant across Bangalore but this joint is worth trying out. The ambience is plain and the service quick. We also learnt that mutton briyani is popular among the customers.
