I moved to Chennai nine years ago, and right away I had the most wonderful opportunity to meet and make new friends - I volunteered for the very first DaanUtsav. From being a much vaunted city of firsts, Chennai certainly appears to lag right behind everyone else when it comes to heritage conservation. The latest metro to steal a march over it is Kolkata, which is close to completing the restoration of two magnificent structures, both built in the colonial era. Mumbai bids farewell to Bappa Mumbai celebrated Ganesh Visarjan by immersing close to 41000 idols over two days at the close of the Ganpati festival this year. Two deaths and over 50 injuries were reported in incidents related to the Visarjan. The annual celebration sees idol immersion after the festivities. The authorities enabled festivities to carry on without disruption by closing 53 roads and a further 99 roads for heavy vehicles. I was at the launch of the Cycle to Work campaign along with the Mayor and the Bicycle Mayor last week. It was very nice to see many cyclists come together, hopeful of renewed efforts to make their commutes and other rides easier and safer. The program is designed to enroll corporates in supporting their employees who cycle to work, and a template for that is being put together.
