Hundreds of people representing various civil society groups participated in the State-level Public Consultation on Social Security issues related to pension held on January 29th at Jain University, Palace Road, Bengaluru. V Srinivas Prasad, Minister for Revenue, Government of Karnataka, said that the state government has been disbursing pension to about 47 lakh people in the state. The pension schemes cover widows, differently-abled persons, the elderly and unmarried single women from the marginalised communities in the state. Come February, Bengaluru’s trees burst into spectacular blooms, and the play of colours continues through the year. The second edition of Neralu, a citizen-led Urban Tree Festival will be organised on February 7, 8 and 14 February at multiple venues. Neralu, which translates to ‘shade’ in Kannada, has been planned to coincide with the blooming season in the city. Most of the markets they plan to destroy are more than 60 years old, and some, like Johnson Market, are much, much older.   We believe the government must consider the heritage value of these markets before deciding to replace them with malls. Over 1000 contract pourakarmikas working in eight zones of BBMP and many supporters gathered on Wednesday at the BBMP head office protesting against the failure of the contractors to pay them monthly wages and BBMPs indifferent attitude in ensuring that powrakarmikas get paid the minimum wages and wages on time. Pourakarmikas from Sunkadakatte area have not been paid since four months. Some of them have not paid their rent and have been thrown out of their rented accommodation by their house owners. High Street Park in Cooke Town is a hub of activity like any other park. Children of all ages come here to play and meet friends. Though the park is earmarked for children below the age of ten, the terrain is rocky, making it hard for the children to utilise the entire park.
