CITIZEN JOURNALISM

Our collaborative model enables urban citizens to not just learn but also engage and contribute their insights and learning as citizen journalists. Across cities, there are remarkable initiatives of citizens, not just activists, Resident Welfare Association (RWA) members and lay volunteers becoming "active citizens" - getting involved in various civic projects from rejuvenating lakes to initiating waste segregation to auditing footpath infrastructure. This section documents their experiences, helping these “doers” share learnings and insights and amplifying citizen voice. Bogged by environmental pollution in their neighbourhood, we residents of Reliable Tranquil Layout, a 116-plot BDA approved layout off Sarjapur and the neighbouring Reliable Residency layout are protesting against Ultratech Ready Mix Cement Concrete Plant (formerly known as Birla Ready Mix Cement Concrete Plant), located on Haralur Main Road. St Joseph's College of Arts and Science, has become the first in the city to be completely powered by solar energy. In order to meet all its energy requirements, the college has a solar power plant, comprising of 432 solar panels, which provide electricity to power all the facilities. These panels produce a 100 kilo watts of power and were installed at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.6 crore. The solar power plant has been operational since May this year.
