Starting this Diwali weekend, Chennai Metro is planning to offer 50% off on travel cost during Sundays and public holidays. NH FASTags to come into effect in Chennai toll plazas too All vehicles having the National Highways (NHAI) FASTags can pass through Tamil Nadu toll plazas operated by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) too, using the same prepaid card.  The single FASTag use is expected to allow smooth movement of FASTag vehicles in its plazas. Dengue outbreak in north Chennai Over 350 cases of dengue were reported in the city in September, with a particular spike in areas like Royapuram and Tondiarpet in north Chennai. Officially, the highest number of cases -- 25 --were reported in Tondiarpet. However, the government has been criticised for under-reporting dengue cases and classifying many such as undiagnosed fevers. Groundwater table rises in the city The city has witnessed a healthy rise of 2 to 4 metres in groundwater level since August, thanks to the rainfall during recent days. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, from June 1st to September 11th, the city has received 416 mm against the normal 356 mm. The rise has not been uniform, however. Pallikaranai marsh among 4 other wetlands in the state to get priority tag The Central government, under its initiative of wetlands rehabilitation has given 4 wetlands including the Pallikaranai marsh  its priority tag. Accordingly, these wetlands cannot be developed without any further approvals and all encroachments, dumping of debris, waste and sewage should be stopped with immediate effect. The state government has also been asked to prepare an outline management plan for these wetlands, for the next 5 years, to be submitted within 3 months. Chennai gets its first electric bus The first electric bus in the city was flagged off between Chennai Central and Tiruvanmiyur early this week. Built as per the specifications suggested by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the bus can run up to 200 km after swapping the battery every 40 km. Private water tankers withdraw strike Tamil Nadu Private Water Tanker Lorry Owners Association has withdrawn its strike following assurances for licences to draw water and the release of seized lorries. The strike was announced over the seizure of water tankers by police, as many operated without licenses. The association members also alleged that many of the water tanker owners were booked under non-bailable sections of the IPC for not carrying a legal permit to draw groundwater and that they were harassed by the police.
