Information for voters in Sholinganallur constituency

Sholinganallur voters, here is all you need to know about your constituency and candidates contesting in the Assembly polls.

Sholinganallur, Tamil Nadu’s largest assembly constituency, remains a major IT hub struggling with a difficult “rurban” transition. It was formed in 2011 after the delimitation exercise. As of early 2026, rapid urbanisation has outpaced core infrastructure, leaving areas like Pallikaranai and Jalladianpet prone to severe monsoon flooding. The lack of a comprehensive underground drainage network leads to sewage overflows and stagnation. Despite its high revenue status, many neighbourhoods still lack piped water and sewage systems, forcing heavy reliance on water tankers.

Mobility is another primary concern, with intense traffic congestion at Sholinganallur Junction and along the OMR and 200-feet Radial Road. While Metro Phase-2 construction is a long-term goal, it currently causes hazardous pedestrian conditions, dust, and poor street lighting. Environmental issues also persist due to waste dumping near Medavakkam Kalukuttai and local lakes. These gaps have intensified public demand for essential services, including a government hospital and dedicated recreational spaces to serve the growing population.

Incumbent MLA: Aravind Ramesh

S Aravind Ramesh is an Indian politician and elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from  Sholinganallur as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate in 2016 and 2021 elections. During his tenure, the constituency has faced immense pressure from rapid population growth, which he has attributed to a lack of coordination between key agencies like the CMDA and Greater Chennai Corporation.

While Ramesh secured a second term in 2021 with a significant margin, his administration has been criticised by residents and opposition candidates for failing to resolve long-standing civic issues, particularly the lack of piped water and poor drainage in high-growth areas. As of April 2026, he is seeking a third consecutive term, promising to finally provide piped water to all households if re-elected.

MLA in the media

Aravind Ramesh has been in the media for various welfare measures, inaugurations, and also his work during floods. In the run-up to the elections, Ramesh said promised works such as storm water drains and drinking water supply were fulfilled in some parts of Sholinganallur. At a meeting with the Federation of OMR Residents Association (FOMRRA) on April 19, Aravind said a separate pipeline is being laid as part of a desalination project to convert seawater into drinking water, and that residents could start applying for connection.

The MLA was in news for the recent inauguration of a multispeciality hospital in Perumbakkam. He has also been in news for inauguration of street lights, water connections and also providing patta for the needy people in his constituency. In 2023, in the aftermath of cyclone Michaung, Semmencherry residents fumed over apathy from the DMK, and the area MLA Ramesh during the subsequent floods.

Key citizen demands

The primary civic demands in Sholinganallur for the 2026 election center on bridging the gap between its status as a high-revenue IT corridor and its lack of basic urban infrastructure. Residents, largely represented by FOMRRA, have consistently demanded the completion of piped water supply and underground sewage networks to end their dependence on expensive water tankers.

Additionally, the constituency faces severe traffic congestion at major junctions and ongoing disruptions from Metro Phase-2 construction, which has led to requests for better road maintenance and pedestrian safety. Addressing chronic flooding in low-lying areas like Pallikaranai and increasing the availability of public services, such as government hospitals and parks, remain top priorities for voters. These issues have forced candidates to provide specific timelines and pledges to secure public support.
