Issues in the Zone

  • The zone was heavily hit during last year’s rains. Several roads in Alwarpet and Mandevalli were water-logged, with sewage and rainwater mixing in the process. Roads such as Habibullah Road and GN Chetty Road were among the worst affected. A common problem in the area during rains is that sewage lines get choked with excess rainwater. Dr. Besant Road in Triplicane experienced extreme water stagnation; Residents have been promised that a new storm water drain will be constructed along the road.
  • Another problem is that of frequent road cave ins. For example, last December parts of Bhrindavan Street in West Mambalam caved in twice within a week. These cave ins are often caused due to incomplete filling in of roads after pipeline repair work or leaks in underground connections. A portion of PS Sivaswamy Salai also caved in recently, due to a leak in the drinking water pipeline.
  • Residents have have been asking for a number of roads to be relaid and garbage from pavements to be removed. Roads such as Vinayagam street, Adams street, TSV Koil street and Mada street require relaying as per residents complaints.
  • The sewage connection from Jeth Road to St Mary’s Road collapsed a few months ago due to the weight of buses. As a result the Metro Water and Sewage Board have had to clean the sewage chambers before the connecting point every two weeks.
  • Residents of T Nagar have expressed displeasure with the Smart City projects in the area. The residents blamed the improper work done under the project as a reason for the flooding.

Fishers of Thiruvanmaiyur Kuppam: Aborigines of the coast, not ‘Beach Grabbers’

Fishers of Thiruvanmaiyur Kuppam challenge claims of encroachment, defending their long-standing rights amid coastal development.

The dispute between the fishermen and the more affluent, non-fishing residents of Thiruvanmaiyur and Besant Nagar has simmered for years, highlighting tensions over land use, development, and livelihoods. Acting upon the complaint from the residents (non-fishers) in the locality, the GCC demolished the temporary constructions made by the fishers of Thiruvanmaiyur Kuppam in June this year. Being less than 40 metres from the coastline, they were termed encroachments. A mainstream news outlet even referred to fishers' construction as ‘beach robbery,’ emphasising concerns that the illegal construction of houses and pathways could lead to the loss of turtle nesting sites and…
