DMK made a clean sweep in Chennai by winning all constituencies in the 2021 Assembly elections. Here is a list of all the winners in Chennai.

With the announcement of the results of the state assembly elections 2021, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has returned to power in Tamil Nadu after a gap of ten years. The DMK continues its stronghold over many parts of Chennai, even reclaiming constituencies such as Mylapore where it had not won in two decades.

However, elections results are just a starting point for citizens, not an end. We must hold our elected representatives accountable throughout their tenure. Who is your new MLA? What are his credentials? What are the issues he needs to address?

Here is a list of all the winners in Chennai and a short introduction to the MLA in your constituency:

Maduravoyal constituency

Ganapathy K is a first time MLA-elect who contested against School Education Minister P Benjamin in the 2021 elections. He is also the party’s Maduravoyal South Secretary.

Ambattur constituency

In 2016, Joseph Samuel had won the ward chairman post for Ambattur zone. He won against AIADMK’s V Alexander by one vote then.

Madhavaram constituency

Sudharsanam won the 2016 elections from the same constituency with 1,22,082 votes. Before the conduct of 2021 elections, he was named as the person in charge for North East district in Chennai that includes Madhavaram and Thiruvottiyur constituencies.

KP Shankar is the younger brother of ex-MLA and former Fisheries Minister KPP Samy, who passed away in 2020. He was a Councillor of the Greater Chennai Corporation ward no. 5, Thiruvottiyur zone.

Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar

J J Ebenezer was part of Chennai North DMK youth wing and is a first-time MLA elected from Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency.

Perambur Constituency

Perambur has seen a tumultuous few years in its electoral history leading up to the recently concluded assembly elections. The constituency was won by P Vetrivel of ADMK in the 2016 polls. He was disqualified by the Speaker after withdrawing support for then CM Edappadi Palanisamy. As a result, a by-election was held in 2019. This election was won by R D Sekar of the DMK. He continues to hold the seat after a comprehensive victory in 2021, polling 52.53% of the total votes.

Kolathur Constituency

DMK supremo MK Stalin has emerged victorious in Kolathur for the third straight term and has taken oath as the Chief Minister of the state. This election saw Stalin poll 60.86% of the votes, overcoming a direct challenge from ADMK’s Aadhi Rajaram.

Villivakkam Constituency

DMK’s A Vetriazhagan has emerged victorious in Villivakkam, defeating former MLA JCD Prabhakar of the ADMK. A Vetriazhagan is the grandson of veteran DMK leader K Anbazhagan. Vetriazhagan was a businessman before his foray into politics. JCD Prabhakar had formerly defeated Vetriazhagan’s grandfather to win the same seat in 2011.

Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar Constituency

Incumbent MLA Sivakumar P alias Thayagam Kavi of DMK has retained his seat with a victory in the 2021 elections. The MLA defeated P L Kalyani of ADMK by securing 61.13% of the votes polled.

Egmore Constituency

I Paranthamen of the DMK has won the Egmore assembly constituency, beating challenger B John Pandian of the Thamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam which was in alliance with the ADMK. Paranthamen secured 57.71% or votes.

Royapuram Constituency

R Murthy, popularly known as Idream R Murthy contested his first election from Royapuram constituency. The proprietor of Idream cinemas in Royapuram, Murthy has been associated with the DMK for many decades now. Some of his promises are to set up a Kendriya Vidyalaya school and an Arts college for the benefit of students, who otherwise travel far away. CM elect MK Stalin had also promised to make Tondiarpet station a railway terminus.

Sekar Babu PK was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency as an AIADMK candidate in 2001 and 2006 elections. In 2011, he joined DMK and has been elected from Harbour constituency this time.

Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni

Udhayanadhi Stalin, son of CM elect MK Stalin, is a first-time MLA elected from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency which was represented by his grandfather, former CM MK Karunanithi.  It is to be noted that there was initial reluctance to nominate Udhayanidhi from the constituency over concerns about the party being accused of indulging dynasty politics. He is also an actor and producer in the Kollywood industry.

Dr N Ezhilan is the son of former Deputy Chief of the State Planning Commission M Naganathan, who was in the past part of the team creating DMK manifestos.

DMK’S T M Anbarasan won the Alandur assembly constituency defeating B Valarmathi of ADMK, who had won the seat in 2001. Anbarasan won the seat in 2016 staving off a challenge from another former MLA in S Ramachandran of the ADMK.

Selvaperunthagai K of the Indian National Congress has won Sriperumbudur constituency, defeating incumbent ADMK MLA K Palani. In a close contest, Selvaperunthagai emerged victorious, securing 43.65% of the votes.
