Tracking Chamarajpet MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan

Zameer Ahmed Khan is a three-term MLA from Chamarajpet. He was fielded in the constituency by former prime minister H D Deve Gowda after former chief minister S M Krishna vacated the seat when he appointed Governor of Maharashtra. The Daridra Narayana rally held at Palace Grounds in 2004 to introduce the relatively new Khan heralded his political star. His close proximity to H D Kumarswamy saw him part of many a political dramas including the coup against the Dharam Singh Government in 2006 when HDK broke ranks with his father to align with the BJP.

In 2016, Khan led a rebellion against his political mentors during the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka. Seven MLAs, including all three MLAs from the city, were suspended from JD(S) for cross-voting. In 2018, Rahul Gandhi welcomed the rebel MLAs into the Congress party.

Khan was a visible minority face of the JD(S) and was the Minister for Haj and WAKF in the JD(S)- BJP government when HDK was the Chief Minister. He is expected to the fill the vacuum of an influential minority leader along with Roshan Baig in Congress. The SSLC-pass Khan has business interests in transport and education, and is a partner in National Travels.

According to his 2018 affidavit, Khan’s income rose marginally, from Rs 24,97,070 in 2013 to Rs 25,65,869.

His movable assets are valued at Rs 58,81,199 and his wife’s assets are valued at Rs 18,93,305 according to his 2018 affidavit. His mother has movable assets worth Rs 22,69,195.

His immovable assets are valued at Rs 39,34,00,000. There are no immovable assets declared for his family.

He has declared liabilities of Rs 22,78,65,459.

January 8, 2015:  Peace prevailed after leaders including MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan convened a meeting to curb the violent mob, protesting the sexual harassment of a child in a school off Mysore road.  

November 25, 2015: Zameer Ahmed Khan participated in the debate about Tipu Sultan in the assembly.

July 23, 2017: Zameer Ahmed Khan said sarcastically that he would kill himself if JDS won and that his followers would remain loyal to him.

August 19, 2017: AICC General Secretary, KC Venugopal, in his presentation to Party President Rahul Gandhi, specifically counted on the minority leaders to target voters, including B Z  Zameer Ahmed Khan. This was before his formal induction into the party.

October 20, 2017: A photograph showing the MLA and his supporters travelling on bikes without wearing helmets went viral.

February 13, 2018: Husband of a BJP corporator, Kardiresh was hacked to death. BJP spokespersons alleged the MLA had some involvement.

March 20, 2018: Khan is active on social media and often posts videos about his initiatives. He gave Rs 5000 to help a person in medical need. He gave Rs 13 lakh for renovation of an ancestral property belonging to an eminent personality in Chamrajpet constituency.

April 3, 2018: The JD(S) fielded Altaf Khan to pit against the Chamrajpet MLA. They engaged in a heavy mud-slinging battle.
