From January 29th, around 600 SSLC students of government schools and aided schools, from the Jayanagar assembly constituency, are putting extra effort into preparing for their upcoming final exams. They are attending coaching classes organised by the Jayanagar Academic Committee (JAC) whose single point goal now is to improve SSLC results in Jayanagar constituency. The constituency covers Pattabhiram Nagar, Byrasandra, Jayanagar East, Gurappanapalya, J P Nagar, Sarakki and Shakambari Nagar.

Presided by Jayanagar MLA B N Vijaykumar, who initiated the idea, the committee comprises of Dr T V Raju, Director RV Institute of Management, Dr Sameera Simha, Retd prof from Vijaya Teachers College, Dr R Srikanta Swamy, Registrar of Christ University and Retd Prof of RV Teachers College Dr K Seshamurthy, Dean Vijaya Computer Training College, Dr N Vijayadhwaja, Principal, Viajaya Teachers Training Institute and Pranesh Sirivara of Prism Books.
With inputs from Professor Ramesh and Professor Gopal Naik of the Centre for Public Policy, IIM(B), the team prepared a structured plan to help improve SSLC results in the constituency. They identified 11 schools in the area whose students needed guidance for the SSLC exams. They conducted a workshop for the teachers and evaluation tests for the students to understand their capability. Based on the response, they decided to conduct a two month long intense coaching programme for the students. They put together a team for almost 60 teachers, like Sarakki High School Headmaster Shyamanna and Bangalore High School Assistant Master Satyaprakash, and a timetable to focus on different subjects.
The special classes started on January 29th; held for one and a half hours a day after school hours (3.30 pm – 5pm), and taught by volunteer teachers from south Bangalore and elsewhere. Classes are held at Ragigudda High school, Youth Centre Jayanagar, and Multi-purpose Corporation Building, Sarakki.
JAC plans more interventions in the next academic year to help improve quality of education. Says JAC convenor, S Muralimohan (who is also Vijaykumar’s Press Coordinator), “You can’t (introduce) change overnight, we are trying to work with the existing structure to improve things”.

Gazebo
BBMP has built a gazebo (a pavilion structure usually found in parks or public spaces) in the mini forest, JP Nagar 3rd phase for the benefit of the residents. The project is implemented by BBMP’s Horticulture Department.

BBMP South Zone Horticulture Superintendent Nagappa Atturkar says, “We are building a bandstand (gazebo) in addition to a walking path were people can relax or do Dhayana in the morning and a place for chatting in the evening”.
He said the cost of the structure is about Rs 2.4 lakhs. Work is underway in the BTM Layout park near Ganesh temple, between 27th and 28th cross and other parks in the city.

That’s a nice cause for the students. And that’s a nice way of upgrading the SSLC results. Even young, students should be aware of how does it feel to be a leader. Everyone is a leader of his own in his or her own way. Aside from that, they should also be thought how to be a good leader. Many says, “A good leader is a good follower.” And I say that that is true. If a certain person doesn’t know his rights and the responsibilities it takes and doesn’t know how to follow, he or she will never be a good leader. I think that it is good to open students to civil rights issue, let’s say gay rights for instance. I just remember Constance McMillen issue.
