Dinesh Gundu Rao, a second generation politician is a four-time MLA from Gandhinagar. He is an engineer by qualification but identifies himself as social worker and politician. His father R Gundu Rao was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1980 to 1983. Dinesh started his political career with the Youth Congress and steadily rose through the ranks. He is currently the Working President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.
He held an independent charge for Consumer Affairs and also was Minister for Food and Civil Supplies in Siddaramaiah Cabinet. His urban and cosmopolitan image combined with his oratory skills has made him a regular on TV channel panels and urban outreach programs. He has been the entrusted with fire fighting by the Congress High Command.

May 18, 2013: When Siddaramaiah selected ministers for his 28 member cabinet, Dinesh Gundu Rao was chosen with Lok Sabha elections at the back of his mind.
July 9, 2013: Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies told mediapersons that the state had enough rice to implement the Anna Bhagya Yojane scheme. Offering rice at Rs 1 per kg for citizens below poverty line,the flagship project could be beneficial, he said. This was possible through the 2.8 lakh metric tonnes of rice purchased from Chandigarh, he said.
December 16, 2013: He responded to the protest by Karnataka State Rice Millers Owners Association for procuring 5 lakh tonnes of levy rice from them. Rao, in defence, said that the initial plan to procure 13.5 lakh tonnes of rice had been reduced and that this is now a legal requirement under the Anna Bhagya Flagship scheme.

November 15, 2014:He was not going to resign since officials had finished their survey and took back the excess land years ago. This accusation was already once given the clean chit in the BJP government in 2008-2009.
November 16, 2014: Minister of Food Supplies said the accusation was an attempt to malign him by the opposition. He claimed to possess the revenue department document from 1983. This 56 acres of land in Yelahanka was purchased by his father, former Chief Minister of Karnataka according to survey numbers 3 and 13.
Dec 26, 2014: After the PIL was filed asking for more transparency in the selection of members of consumer forums, Dinesh Gundu Rao said that he was looking into recruiting a separate director for consumer affairs.
February 28, 2015: MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao said that the monthly budget on food grains had decreased for the poor ever since Anna Bhagya Scheme came into place in 2013.
November 26, 2015: Dinesh Gundu Rao argued that Social Welfare Minister Anjaneya did not need to resign while the CID inquiry on corruption allegations against his family members was on.
December 12, 2017: At the release of the first citizen manifesto by Citizens for Bangalore (CfB),Rao acknowledged that important issues were highlighted, and that the pre-poll manifesto is taken seriously, which will be decided in a committee headed by Veerappa Moily.

August 11, 2016: He wrote to the CM asking to look into organisations spreading fear in the state seeking to ban them. Most importantly, the Bajrang Dal for inflicting violence on dalits in Chikmaglur. He clarified he was not targeting them for having a Hindutva ideology.
August 23, 2016: Rao condemned ABVP for protesting at a press conference for Kashmiri Pandits hosted by Amnesty International. He asked them to produce proof of the sedition charges they made against the NGO.
March 4, 2017: Congress Committee President, Dinesh Gundu Rao, denied applying a soft hindutva approach and said that the cow slaughter law is age-old, and does not support cow vigilantism. This was in response to a petition seeking to challenge the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964.
