Delhi citizens force Centre to rethink tree cutting The vehement and continuing protests of citizens against the proposed felling of trees to make way for redevelopment of seven government colonies has succeeded in forcing the Centre to reconsider their plan. Efforts to tackle the burgeoning solid waste crisis looming in Chennai have gained momentum. With the city generating a whopping 4500 tonnes of garbage on a daily basis, measures to tackle the growing challenges of waste management began with an attempt by the Corporation of Chennai to revive source segregation last year. Prepare to pay if you litter or spit! Chennai Corporation has framed solid waste management bylaws under Section 349 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act of 1919 to collect fines ranging from ₹100 to ₹25,000 for littering. The bylaws apply to domestic, institutional, commercial and any other non-residential solid waste generators, as well as individuals who dump solid waste in stormwater drains, underground sewage systems and waterbodies in the city. Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is no more the monopoly provider of shared rides in the city, with share autorickshaws eating into its ridership on arterial routes. Moreover, it is losing revenues after it raised the fares, without any improvement to bus services or their quality – it had no air-conditioned services to offer this summer.
