In the past few months, I've been looking at how people continue to worship trees in Bangalore and how this can generate community space for a neighbourhood. I have been specifically looking at the Peepul tree and its ability to create places of memory and cultural value. Recently they also came to know that another 491 trees are waiting in the queue to be cut. They claim that the trees are 11-year-old. Just planting tree saplings is not enough. The 124-acre Doddabommasandra Lake (located in Vidyaranyapura area of north Bangalore) is now richer by 1500 saplings! Yesterday morning (Sunday, 27th July 2014) more than 950 people of all ages participated in a major tree planting activity, as a part of the neighbourhood's lake rejuvenation efforts.  For the senior citizens, the event was one that evoked memories of old Bangalore, when everybody participated in "community" activities without having to be invited. High Court of Karnataka (HC) suggested that BBMP make payments for tree-planting contracts only after monitoring the survival rate of the seedlings for an year after planting, to ensure that the seedlings planted are protected and maintained.
