Fires in Perungudi and RGGGH A fire began in Chennai's Perungudi dumpyard on Wednesday and continues to rage over many days. Several families living within a 1 km radius of the dumpyard had to move out owing to the toxic fumes in the air which were causing respiratory issues. Wearing mask made mandatory in public places The Tamil Nadu Government has reinstated the rule that masks should be worn in Chennai and across the state while out in public . According to Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan, the imposition of a Rs. 500 fine will be imposed for non compliance with the rule. Peripheral areas to get piped water supply According to the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), residents of OMR, ECR, Madhavaram, Thiruvottiyur and Manali will get piped water supply and an underground sewage system soon. The Metro Water board plans to call tenders for around Rs. 2900 crore for water supply and underground sewage systems in areas in Neelankarai and Semmencherry. Property tax set to increase in Chennai The state government has ordered local bodies to revise property tax following the recommendations of a committee appointed to study the issues. As a result, property tax in Chennai could be set to rise by up to 150%. The notification for the same was issued by the Municipal Administration Secretary. The committee's recommendations for Chennai include that the taxes in core areas be hiked by between 50% to 150%. Chennai experienced its hottest day of the year this week On Tuesday 22nd March, Chennai residents experienced high humidity and searing heat.  The weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 37.6 degree Celsius and 38 degree Celsius respectively, around 4 degree Celsius above average for the day. According to experts from the Meteorological Department, the extreme heat has been triggered by the Westerlies and Northwesterlies from the land. New Stormwater drains worth 28 crores to come up in parts of the city The tenders for constructing new storm water drains (SWDs) in Chennai have been floated under the Singara Chennai 2.0 funding and by the Greater Chennai Corporation. These drains are to be constructed in central areas of the city such as Nungambakkam, Virugambakkam, T Nagar, Gopalapuram. Prior to this, tenders for SWD projects in Kodambakkam, Teynampet, Adyar and Santhome were floated by the GCC. Temperatures on the rise due to urban sprawl The urban and peri-urban parts of Chennai Metropolitan Area are affected by rise in temperatures and increasingly experiencing heat island effects as a result of urban sprawl. The built-up area in the CMA stands at 48.7%, according to a case study by the Centre for Water Resources, Anna University. Chennai gets first Dalit woman Mayor R Priya Rajan, a 28-year-old M. Com graduate, was elected Mayor of Chennai following the indirect elections which took place on Friday.
