Evictions near the Cooum in Triplicane Around 3000 families along the banks of the Cooum river near Triplicane were evicted forcibly by the Chennai police and slum clearance authorities on December 30th. The eviction drive is part of the river restoration project. The families residing in Gandhi Nagar, Sathyamoorthy Nagar and Indira Nagar were evicted without notice, prompting protests from the residents. The residents lamented that the move would leave many without homes and would affect the continued education of many of the school and college-going children. Spanish firm to keep Chennai clean Chennai Corporation has issued work orders to a Spanish firm for conservancy operations in seven zones. The firm will be paid based on performance indicators and not based on the tonnage of waste, which has been introduced for the first time in the country. The firm will take over collection and transportation of waste including doorstep collection, street sweeping and handling of domestic and hazardous waste for a period of eight years. Plea to regulate parking charges at malls The State Information Commission(SIC) has directed Chennai Corporation to look at parking charges at malls. The directive was issued following a plea filed by a social activist. Earlier in November 2017, the activist, Kalyanasundaram sought information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act from the Public Information Officer of the Chennai Corporation and wanted to know the laws under which management of malls collect parking charges. Chennai gets first online portal to exchange reusable products Chennai became the first city in the country to have waste trading online, with the city corporation launching a website where Chennaites can buy and sell reusable and recycled products. A first-of-its-kind website in India, www.madraswasteexchange.com has a variety of products made from dry and wet waste such as school bags, slippers, vermicompost, manure, coconut powder, lemon dishwash among other products. Six-month deadline for Marina beach to be turned world-class The Madras High Court has directed civic and police officials to do all that it takes to make Marina beach world-class in six months.  The court also directed the commissioner of GCC and Chennai police to work together and develop the beach into a world-class, clean beach. Toll plazas on ECR and OMR to be FASTag-ged The state highways department is planning to introduce the NHAI's RFID-based FASTag in all the toll plazas, including OMR and ECR. With the rise in vehicle traffic along the IT corridor, authorities are planning to double the local tag lanes which can be later turned into FASTag lanes. As per revised Chennai Solid Waste Management Bylaws 2019, residents and shopkeepers found burning garbage in their own premises will have to pay a fine of ₹500 and ₹2,000 respectively.  Furthermore, any resident who dumps garbage in a public place and burns it will have to pay a fine of ₹1,000. A smoke-filled Chennai yet again this Diwali Though there have been contrasting reports from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), by all accounts, air quality levels post Diwali were poor.
