Projects for clean air to be launched in Chennai The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will initiate a slew of schemes to improve air quality in the city. The projects in the pipeline include mechanised cleaning of polluted roads, robust policy for non-motorised transport and revamping of on-street parking in the city. CMWSSB cracks down on illegal connections The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has begun to clamp down on unauthorised sewage and water connections in the city. The move comes on the heels of an order by the Madras High Court.  As part of the drive,  the CMWSSB has identified a total of 1597 illegal water and sewage connections. Manali and Madhavaram have the highest number of illegal connections as per data from the CMWSSB. MRTS operations on one line suspended temporarily MRTS services between Beach - Chintadripet will be suspended for a period of seven months. The suspension will be in effect from August 27. The Southern Railways has undertaken the decision to pause services in order to carry out work on the fourth line between Beach - Egmore. For the duration of the suspension, the trains from Beach - Velachery will run from Chintadripet - Velachery. The number of services along the line will drop from 122 to 80. Telemedicine services launched at RGGGH Chennai’s largest government hospital, the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, has rolled out telemedicine services for various specialities. The consultations will take place between Monday to Saturday. The departments that are covered include paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, dermatology, surgery, general medicine and geriatrics. The teleconsultation service will be available from 9 am to 12 noon. The service can be availed by those who are over 18 years of age. Funding for second phase of Chennai City Partnership plan The second phase of the Chennai City Partnership will receive funding of 350 million dollars from the World Bank. The second phase will reportedly focus on improving Digital Chennai for e-mobility and smart parking solutions and implementing projects to improve bus and suburban rail services. Further, parking, e-mobility and transport hubs will also be developed in various parts of the city under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Vehicles to be fined for illegal parking The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) will be imposing fines on vehicles found to have been parked illegally. The traffic police have been instructed to photograph the vehicles and issue a challan to the owners. This move has been put in place as many vehicles have been parked in no-parking zones, affecting traffic flow. All arterial roads in the city have been declared no parking zones and vehicles parked here will be fined. GCC to provide vaccines for infants and pregnant women Under Mission Indradanush 5.0, an initiative of the Union government, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to vaccinate infants and pregnant women. The first round of the vaccination drive will be held from August 7 to August 15. The second and third rounds of the vaccination drives will take place in September and October respectively. Application for basic income scheme for women launched in Chennai Applications have been made available for the Kalaignar Magalir Udhavi Thittam, the basic income scheme for women launched by the Tamil Nadu state government.  The scheme excludes households that own a four-wheeler or consumes more than 500 units of electricity per billing cycle. The scheme is expected to benefit one crore women state-wide.  The first phase of the scheme will be rolled out in half of Chennai’s 200 wards. 15 railway stations in Chennai soon to get a facelift The Southern Railways has planned to revamp 15 railway stations in Chennai at the cost of Rs 251.97 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The stations that are to get the facelift includes, Guindy, Ambattur, Park, Gummidipoondi and Mambalam. The railway stations will have parking and foot-over-bridges in addition to improving the amenities like broader approach roads, installing CCTV cameras, lifts, escalators, waiting rooms, roof plazas, retail spaces and amenities for persons with disability. Flyovers to be open at night in Chennai Flyovers across Chennai will be open overnight after a recent decision by the city’s Traffic Police. Previously, all flyovers were shut during the night time, forcing motorists to take longer routes to reach their destination.  The restriction on the use of flyovers during the night was put in place during the pandemic to reduce vehicular movement but had continue long after.
