Corporation sets one month vaccination target The Greater Chennai Corporation has set a target of one month to complete the COVID-19 vaccination of all those who are over 18 years of age. To this end, the civic body has begun deploying teams to various areas of the city to carry out the vaccination. The special teams are tasked with persuading those residents who have not taken the vaccine so far. Whole-genome lab inaugurated in Chennai In a bid to track vector-borne diseases and superbugs resistant to antibiotics, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated a whole-genome sequencing lab at the state public health laboratory in Chennai.  The facility will also help detect SARS-CoV-2 variants. When the virus multiplies, the mutations get accumulated in the genetic code. Corporation shortlists 10 themes for Singara Chennai 2.0 With residents’ welfare associations sharing suggestions to transform the city under the Singara Chennai 2.0 project, the civic body has shortlisted 10 themes for the broad changes in store.   The corporation will be allocated Rs 300 crore and the Metrowater Rs 200 crore for executing the project. While a draft of the vision  for the project has been prepared, a government order is awaited to go ahead with the work planned. Health infrastructure gets a boost in city While speaking in the ongoing Assembly session, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced the construction of new premises for 13 urban primary health centres (UPHC) in the Greater Chennai Corporation limits. Further, the UPHC at Sanjeevarayanpet in the Royapuram zone would be upgraded to a 100-bed hospital.  Some of the other announcements that will boost the health infrastructure in Chennai are: Setting up a state-run whole genome sequencing labo in the DMS Complex in Chennai at a cost of ₹4 crore. Exclusive vaccine camp to target senior citizens In a bid to vaccinate the elderly population in Chennai who visit hospitals as outpatients, the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) has inaugurated a dedicated vaccine camp at the geriatric ward of the institution. The hospital receives about 150 to 200 senior citizens as outpatients every day. The hospital also inaugurated a 24/7 vaccine centre for vaccinating outpatients. OMR-ECR link work begins In a bid to reduce bottlenecks along the key roads, the state highways department has begun construction work to connect Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and East Coast Road (ECR) at Thoraipakkam junction. The construction work, estimated to cost Rs 204 crore, will connect Neelankarai directly with Thoraipakkam. The work will be carried out in two phases.The first phase, a 760 m stretch from Thoraipakkam to Buckingham Canal is underway. Two new COVID clusters identified in Chennai Two new clusters recording over 20 COVID cases have been identified in Chennai. On August 2nd, a religious gathering near Kilpauk turned out to be the first cluster that led to around 20 infections out of 275 samples.  An apartment complex in Sholinganallur has emerged as the second major cluster where 23 out of 398 samples tested positive. 78.2% seropositivity rate in Chennai The fourth round of serosurveys revealed that the city has an overall seroprevalence rate of 78.2%. Conducted by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), the Indian Council of Medical Research’s National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) and the National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT), 7000 samples were collected from 204 streets in 51 wards spread across all zones.  The results showed that Tondiarpet had the highest seroprevalence of 83.3% and Madhavaram the lowest of 72.5% of the 15 zones in Chennai. COVID: Cases surge marginally, Airport introduces rapid testing On July 30th, Chennai recorded 181 new COVID cases. While the trend was downwards, it has seen a marginal spike over the past two days. On the same day, the city reported one death and 151 discharges and 1,479 persons are under treatment.  As the lockdown norms are relaxed to a great extent in the state, the Chennai airport will conduct Rapid PCR tests for outbound international travellers at the airport and the results will be declared in 13 minutes. Chennai fully vaccinates 15% of eligible population As on July 20th, data shows that Chennai has the highest percentage of vaccinated population in comparison with metro cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad. While the eligible population of the city is 59.45 lakh, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has fully vaccinated 15% of it (9.11 lakh). The corporation credits the multipronged initiatives taken by them to reach the number.
