‘At risk’ travellers to be tested on arrival  Passengers arriving to the Chennai airport from ‘at risk’ countries, where the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected, will be subject to additional screening. Those who reach Chennai from Europe, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Israel have been deemed ‘at-risk’. Revenue sharing under consideration for bus terminals The Chennai Metropolitan Development authority is looking into the feasibility of a revenue-sharing model for Kilambakkam, Kuthambakkam and Madhavaram bus terminals. It is also exploring how best to use the Koyambedu bus terminal and the omni bus terminal when the south and west bound buses start operations out of Kilambakkam. Tenders have been issued as the planning body is looking for a concessionaire to operate and maintain the three bus terminals. Half of Chennai without stormwater drains; sewer lines helped clear floodwater In the aftermath of the recent spell of rains that inundated the city, questions are being asked of the stormwater drain network that should have prevented water-logging. Data shows that more than half the city still doesn’t have a robust, well-connected network of drains, causing flooding during monsoons. The city has 2058 km of drains, which is less than 50% of the area that should be covered to prevent water-logging. Velachery and Koyambedu flyovers open to public Two much-awaited infrastructure projects in the city were inaugurated by Chief Minister M K Stalin earlier this week. One arm of the Velachery flyover and a 1.15-km long Koyambedu flyover were thrown open for public use.  The Koyambedu flyover has been under construction since 2015. The project saw several delays as the authorities had to work around the heavy flow of traffic along this route and due to issues with land acquisition. The project cost a total of Rs 93.5 crore. Metro to issue QR code-based tickets The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to issue QR code-based tickets that will enable contactless travel. The QR code is to be printed on paper tickets. The Metro currently uses a token system where the reusable tokens are sanitised after each use.  The QR code-based tickets will also ensure adherence to COVID safety norms as customers no longer have to handle the tokens. Corporation evicts pavement dwellers in Egmore The Greater Chennai Corporation evicted close to 50 families who had been residing on the pavement close to Egmore Railways station. The families allege that they had been given no notice of the move and that their belongings had been bundled and taken away. The evicted families were residents of Egmore for close to five decades. After the eviction they are currently housed in a Corporation shelter near Pattalam with the promise of permanent housing in 10 days. Marina beach safety improved Following a spate of drowning deaths along the Marina beach, safety measures have been beefed up at the Marina beach. There have been 13 deaths in the past 50 days, prompting action by the authorities to take action to ensure the safety of the general public. The most recent incident involves the disappearance of two undergraduate students, feared to have been drowned in the rough seas. Monsoon preparedness works in the city The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has intensified its monsoon preparedness drive following rains lashing the city through the week. Officials have begun conducting inspections of stormwater drains across the city. Equipment necessary to pump out water in case of water logging is on standby with the civic body earmarking 807 pumps for this purpose. Earth movers have also been placed at river mouths in the city. Beautification work by Corporation Several beautification projects have been initiated in the city across localities by the Chennai Corporation. A new fountain at Marina beach has been completed and another such structure is under construction near the War Memorial and Egmore Railway Station.
