BBMP

It was a slum, known for notorious rowdies like Kotwal, Kitty and others, filled with uneducated, poverty-ridden families, struggling to make the ends meet. Even today, with no proper drainage system or well-planned civic amenities, many areas in Srirampuram can be rated just a little more than slums. In such a scenario has come up this school, which is trying to light the lives of many underprivileged children from the area. Children being trained in dance and prayers. The dug footpath with tree trunks at the Sunkadakatte main road leaves no space for pedestrians. Pic: Bosky Khanna For Bhavya K, a resident of Sunkadakatte, Magadi Road, travelling on a mere 2-km stretch till Sumanahalli flyover takes around 45 minutes. The reason: the road is dug by the civic agencies for widening and laying pipelines. This is not all - the road is also filled with potholes and resembles nothing less than a death trap. She was even more shocked on Thursday, June 13, 2013, when she saw three big trees cut to the stump and logs piled up…

(B)looming disasters

The recent trend of flowering trees blooming simultaneously has experts worried, though not panicked. Yet, this unnatural phenomenon is just one of the many warning signs that should be heeded. Pedestrians are at risk while crossing busy roads where traffic is moving very fast. In part-I, I argued that our planners, politicians and administrators put Bengaluru's development on steroids over the last 10 years, the way farmers sometimes do for agriculture, only to find that the soil dies later.I also argued that we have built a Bengaluru in the form of a giant shining saucer that is suspended at 10,000 feet above the real land of this city. There is one single pipe holding up the saucer and through this pipe, water, services, resources and low-income jobs are sucked through to the fast-paced life above. The pipe though is now bursting at the seams,…
