United Bengaluru in association with Let’s Be The Change (LBTC) under the leadership of MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar, is launching ‘Mega Cleanathon’. Responding to a letter from the MP, various organizations, NGOS, RWAs, Citizen Activists will be joining this fight and as a process to clean Bengaluru, the kick-start of the Mega Cleanathon will be with cleaning garbage and lakes in Bengaluru on October 2nd, 2017 across Bengaluru (in about 72 wards).
These Spots will be cleaned by the volunteers, followed by painting of walls in their respective areas. Beautiful paintings will encourage citizens to keep the area clean. City based musical bands Swarathma, Girish Prabhu Collective and few other bands will also be participating and energizing volunteers by playing some of their best songs during the cleanathon.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will also be lending a supporting hand toward the cleaning up process by assigning Pourakarmikas, Health Inspectors and Engineers for each wards.
Anirudh S Dutt, President, Let’s Be The Change said, “We gave a platform to citizens to send in the black spots in their respective wards and we have received over 100 entries from volunteers. These leads will be spot fixed on 2nd October by these volunteers by clearing the garbage and painting the area. We want more and more citizens to volunteer for this cause and participate in making our city clean and green again.”
NS Ramakanth, Member, Solid Waste Management Roundtable said, “It is easy to criticize BBMP and other government agencies for garbage mismanagement and we as citizens do nothing. Pourakarmika should not be the only one who is cleaning the city, we as citizens should also participate and get involved if we want clean residential areas. Cleaning is a change in itself and if we want a to change our society, we should start by cleaning our surroundings.”
Jishnu Dasgupta, Member, Swarathma said, “Swarathma and Let’s Be The Change together have done many interesting exercises and the best part is, when music and change go hand in hand, pourakarmikas enjoy it. Music binds people together and we hope more music groups come forward for this event as well as future events. We should take the idea of continuous positive change to a level where people enjoy and get involved in this kind of activities.”
Girish Prabhu, Musician, Girish Prabhu Collective said, “As citizens we should start the change from our home and just by segregating dry waste and wet waste we can help a lot to the society.”
Suresh NR, Convener, United Bengaluru said, “As we all know, over the years, our proud garden city has turned into internationally infamous garbage city – Thanks to the government’s apathy and the garbage mafia, Citizens are reluctant to segregate waste at source as they have witnessed the BBMP mixing segregated waste in front of them. To create necessary awareness and bring back Bengaluru of Kempegowda’s dream, United Bengaluru is joining hands with many link minded organizations (RWAs, NGO, lake Groups) in fixing 70+ black spots across the city and many lakes will be cleaned on 2nd October 2017. We believe, this is the best way to commemorate 148th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji.”
Sridhar Pabbisetty, CEO, Namma Bengaluru Foundation said, “Black Spots are breading grounds for pests like mosquitos, flies and rodents that spread lot of diseases like dengue, chikungunya, malaria and plague. We as citizens should control these black spots and ensure that we live in clean and garbage free neighbourhood.”
