Final ward reservation list stumps most corporators

Most BBMP councillors will not be able to stand for election in their current ward under the new reservation rules. Here is the list of old, draft and new reservation categories.

Reservation in as many as 46 wards have been changed in the final roster when compared to the draft. Out of 198 wards, 97 wards have been reserved for women. It is for the time in BBMP election, 50 per cent seats have been reserved for women under women’s quota.s

Corporators from the BJP who have alleged foul play in the preparation of reservation roster and have blamed the government of involving in vindictive politics, have approached the High Court. They have appealed the court to quash the reservation roster. N R Ramesh, who was the floor leader in the BBMP Council told Citizen Matters that current reservation pattern has been framed in such a way that prominent BJP councillors will not be able to contest in their wards. Out of 113 BJP councillors, 87 of them can not contest from their wards, whereas 38 of 60 Congress corporators and 12 out of 14 JD(S) corporators will not be able to contest the election from their wards.

Mayor Shanthakumari (Mudalpalya), former mayors S K Nataraj (Sarakki ward), Sharadamma (Shettihalli ward), floor leader N R Ramesh (Yediyur) and others will not be able to contest from their wards as per the final reservation.

However, the High Court on Friday did not grant stay on the reservation case. It directed the State Election Commission, Urban Development Department and the BBMP to file objections on the matter in the next hearing. The case has been posted for April 20th.

Here is the list of reservation in BBMP wards published on April 13th 2015.

Mumbai: Who gets to be ‘Ladki Bahin’ and who gets left behind?

Without documents like ration cards and Aadhaar cards, marginalised communities in Thane fail to access schemes meant for them.

“Are we not 'ladki bahins' too?” wonder some women from migrant families of Chinchpada, Airoli in Thane. When the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana was launched, these low-income families hoped to benefit from the scheme, which promises women a monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,500 if their family’s annual income does not exceed Rs 2,50,000. This initiative seems like it would offer some relief to low-income migrant worker families in Chinchpada. However, it raises the question: who qualifies as a 'Ladki Bahin' (ladki bahin means dear sister)? A key barrier is the lack of essential documentation, such as Aadhaar cards,…
