City news that matters

The past week has been a special one for Indians across the globe. Mangalyaan, India’s low-cost Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft, entered the Mars orbit on September 23rd, making it the first spacecraft to achieve this in its maiden attempt. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi was here in Bangalore to witness the spacecraft enter the Martian orbit at ISRO’s mission control centre.

As a Facebook post put it, “Total distance covered by Mangalyaan – 68 crore km and total cost – 454 crore. That makes cost per km, Rs 6.67 – cheaper than Bangalore autos!”

And before our Bengaluru This Week roundup, here’s the curation of latest city news.

  • PM Modi also announced that ‘Mission Swachh Bharata’, a mission to clean India, would be launched on October 2nd. The Prime Minister stated that he himself would pick up the broom, and urged citizens to dedicate at least 100 hours towards cleanliness.
  • Even as RTO officials were pulling up non-Karnataka vehicles for non-payment of lifetime tax, the Kerala Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy intervened asking why Kerala-registered vehicle owners were being harassed.
  • There are plans underway to raze the 142-year-old School Hall of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School and replace it with a new building that will apparently be a mix of Princeton, Stanford & Harvard. Old Cottonians across the globe have expressed their dissent with the move.
  • Lalbagh will host an Orchid exhibition from October 17th.
  • The encroachment of Sarakki lake remains uncleared even after the deadline. The 44-acre encroached area is estimated to be worth Rs 500 crore.
  • Indiranagar will host Cycle Day on September 28th. Talks are on to get get Cycle Day to Malleshwaram too.
  • Two BWSSB contract workers fell into a manhole and breathed their last when they tried to open a manhole to check its depth. The poisonous gas from the manhole is said to be the cause.
  • After Mahalaya Amavasya, it is Dasara season in the city. While traditional Bangaloreans are busy with Gombe Pooja where they place different dolls, folks from West Bengal and Odisha are busy organising Durga Pooja. It is also holiday season for most schools, and fun is in the air.
