Issues in the zone:

  • Many parts of the zone such as T Nagar, Saidapet, West Mambalam, K.K. Nagar, Ashok Nagar have experienced extreme water logging during last year’s rains. In Saidapet, residents cite the example of Thiruvalluvar Street, where water stagnated and rose as rains continued. In T Nagar, despite heavy investments and publicity around the Smart City Project in the area, the new storm water drains and civic infrastructure were unable to take the load of rainwater coming in. Residents have asked for the sewer lines and stormwater drains to be redone, as well as a monthly open house at the respective division offices, to ensure communication between officials and residents.
  • Sellers at Koyambedu Wholesale Fruits and Vegetables Market have been demanding proper facilities such as clean drinking water, a healthcare center and a park, for years.
  • Residents of K.K. Nagar (coming under ward 136) have been asking for a community hall, a library, and maintenance of parks in the area. Residents in West Mambalam (coming under ward 134) have voiced concern over the sewage lines in the area, as several houses were inundated during the rains and sewage was found to be mixing with the stagnated water.
  • Pondy Bazar has been in bad shape, especially after its development work started. Some of the key concerns are that there is a lack of a well thought-out parking policy and the Pedestrian Plaza project has been poorly planned.
  • The Kodambakkam Residential Welfare Association has also mentioned how waste often overflows in public dustbins. There is a lack of home level waste segregation, which increases the burden on conservancy workers who would have to wade through the ill-maintained public dustbins.
  • Construction for Metro Rail Phase 2 has led to large scale traffic congestion in the zone, due to shrunken road space.

The Mahayuti has swept the Maharashtra assembly elections, and government formation will happen soon. Here is a list of the newly elected MLAs.

Riding on the success of Ladki Bahin Scheme and a flurry of manifesto promises from better pension for older people, increased honorarium for Asha and Anganwadi workers, the Mahayuti - BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde)  and NCP ( Ajit Pawar) have swept the assembly elections with a tally of 230 out 288 seats in Maharashtra and 22 out of 36 seats in Mumbai. They are yet to announce the chief minister amidst heavy speculation as successful MLAs celebrate. Maharashtra elections 2024: What do political parties promise for Mumbai in their manifestos?

Political parties have tried hard to woo their voters before assembly elections. We analyse their manifestos ahead of voting on November 20.

The 2024 Maharashtra election is not just a crucial determiner for the State but also for Mumbai. This is because it comes at a time when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been disbanded, leaving citizens without corporators to represent their concerns for the past two years. With no local representation, it isn't surprising that many candidates have released their individual manifestos, outlining the work they plan to undertake in their constituencies within the city. But do these manifestos address the challenges Mumbai is facing right now? The city has been struggling with a myriad of issues — huge gaps…
