Namma Bengaluru Foundation met the BBMP Administrator, Vijay Bhaskar and handed over a memorandum requesting them to take cognisance of the following issues and initiate action on the same.
Delay in the completion of Tender Sure project across 7 major roads in Bengaluru
The delay in completion of the above-mentioned project is a major cause of traffic congestion on these roads and has caused grave inconvenience to the pedestrians. We urge you to expedite the completion of this project and ensure that the contractors are held accountable for the delay in the project.
Urgent need to de-silt storm water drains and remove encroachments from Raja Kaluves
On an average Bengaluru receives 80 to 100 mm of rain fall from March to June. However, Bengaluru has received around 132mm of rainfall in less than a week due to unseasonal showers. This has wreaked havoc in many areas, especially in suburban areas. To a great extent, this can be attributed to the clogged storm water drains. In order to prevent such large scale urban flooding, we urge you to carry out timely de-silting of storm water drains and drains across Bengaluru at the earliest. The Met department has predicted heavy downpour in the month of June, the BBMP should carry out the above mentioned work on priority.
Fix accountability on erring officials whose dereliction of duty puts members of the public at grave risk of injury
A large number of foothpaths and culverts across Bengaluru are broken or damaged. This not only causes grave inconvenience to pedestrians, but it also puts pedestrians at great risk of injury and death. In the past, the honorable High Court has directed the BBMP to repair and remove encroachments from footpaths. The High Court has been monitoring the progress of the same. The tragic drowning of an eight year old after falling into an uncovered drain, is a grim reminder of the negligence by public officials. The subsequent High court monitored investigation is a grim reminder of the lack of adequate accountability mechanisms in our civic agencies.
However, we would like to point out that judicial intervention cannot be a substitute for systemic reforms to fix accountability. The considerable delay in obtaining sanction for prosecuting officials strikes at the very root of the fixing accountability. We urge you to strengthen the process of fixing accountability on negligent public officials.
Rampant violation of building bye-laws by kalyana mantaps, marriage halls and community halls across Bengaluru
Many of the kalyana mantaps are using their parking lot as dining halls which is violation of Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976. This has aggravated the traffic jams in the city, since the roads are being used for parking. We would like to bring to your notice that during 2009 BBMP had acted against 28 halls for violating the bye laws. We hereby request you to initiate action against the kalyana mantaps, marriage halls, community halls and hotels violating the building bye laws of KMC Act, 1976 across Bengaluru at the earliest and implement the Lokayukta Order passed in January 2014 asking BBMP to take action on those
