Register your borewell now, if you haven’t already!

You can also complain to the government if you are being approached by middlemen who demand excess money to get your borewell registered.

The Karnataka government is trying to draw the attention of citizens yet again, to get their borewells registered.

The government has notified 35 taluks in 12 districts of the state as the places that are overdrawing water. It has declared that it is mandatory to register borewells in these areas. The effort had been launched by the state government an year ago, however it does not seem to have reached everyone.

How does this affect you, the citizen of Bengaluru?

If you have a borewell and if it is not registered, you need to get it registered. If you are planning to dig a borewell you need a permission from Department of Mines and Geology, and should register the borewell with BWSSB once it is complete.

If your borewell is not registered, you can be fined up to Rs. 10,000 and/or imprisonment up to three years.

How to identify whether the borewell is registered or not?

Check your BWSSB bill. If there is a mention of Rs 50 or more in front of ‘borewell charges,’ then the borewell is registered. Otherwise it needs to be registered.

How to get the borewell registered?

Cities need governance, not clearance: Making space for street vendors

Evictions ignore the law and harm livelihoods. Footpaths are shared spaces where pedestrians and vendors can coexist with real planning.

Recently, on my way home from my office in Bengaluru, I noticed that the street vendor who usually sat across from my office building had disappeared. It wasn't until I began following news reports that I realised her absence was part of something much larger. Following the Supreme Court's judgement on walkability in June 2026, city governments launched eviction drives against the most vulnerable users of streets and footpaths in India. Within weeks, street vendors across Mysore, Bengaluru, and Kolkata were evicted from footpaths without notice. News reports described altercations between evicted street vendors and civic officials as the eviction…
