Manoj Tiwari: North East Delhi MP’s performance in parliament below average

Manoj Tiwari, the incumbent BJP MP from North East Delhi constituency, is contesting again this Lok Sabha election. Tiwari's performance, both in parliament and in developing his constituency, has been underwhelming

Manoj Kumar Tiwari had a colourful past as a popular Bhojpuri actor and even a Big Boss contestant, before he joined politics. Tiwari joined politics in 2009, and got a ticket from Samajwadi Party to contest in that year’s Lok Sabha election from Gorakhpur. However, he lost to Yogi Adityanath of BJP.

By 2014, he had switched to the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). He won the North East Delhi constituency in 2014 as a BJP candidate.

In spite of high rhetoric and promises, Tiwari has failed to fully utilise the MPLADS funds allocated to him to develop his constituency, which continues to be one of the poorest pockets of Delhi. His performance in the parliament is also average.

MP in news

Tiwari has been in the news for his alleged inefficiency as an MP. A recent article in the Patriot found that the residents of Kadipur village, which Tiwari had adopted, were dissatisfied with the works being done there. Tiwari had adopted this village located 8 km away from Samaypur Badli metro station, under the centre’s Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana. The villagers claimed that though they had free Wi-Fi, there were no basic facilities like water or transport.

This April, AAP released a report card on Tiwari, claiming he had fared poorly on many counts, such as in developing the villages he adopted, debates initiated on statehood, metro fare hike, sealing of shops etc.

In late 2018, at the inauguration of the Signature Bridge across Yamuna, Tiwari was involved in a brawl with AAP leaders and the Delhi police. He accused the police of misbehaving with him. The incident resulted in a police case against Tiwari as well as against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP legislator Amanatullah Khan.

The 2024 Maharashtra election is not just a crucial determiner for the State but also for Mumbai. This is because it comes at a time when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been disbanded, leaving citizens without corporators to represent their concerns for the past two years.
