Not-so-Young Turk works to retain seat in Byatrayanapura

Incumbent MLA Krishna Byregowda is fighting the perception of not being accessible. 16 candidates are in the fray in this northern part of Bengaluru.

Byatarayanapura is a part of the Bangalore Urban District with around 3.1 lakh voters. It suffers from road infrastructure issues. Bus connectivity is also of concern to residents. Land encroachment is another troublesome issue. Bad roads have been a menace to this constituency. They’ve led to unbearable traffic and road accidents. Drinking water supply also remains inadequate. Reason being, borewells have gone dry.

The constituency consists of seven BBMP wards — Jakkur, Thanisandra, Byatarayanapura, Kodigehalli, Vidyaranyapura, Doddabommasandra and Kuvempunagar; as well as eight gram panchayats of Doddajalla, Chikkajalla, Hunsemaranahalli, Bagalur, Marenahalli, Sonappanahalli, Betta Halasooru, Bandi Kodigehalli; and three Zilla Panchayats of Betta Halasuru, Hunsemaranahalli, Bagalur.

Making the invisible visible: Why Bengaluru needs effective groundwater monitoring

Ten assessment points in Bengaluru are over-exploited for groundwater, while government bodies lack the resources for effective monitoring.

Monitoring groundwater level is like keeping a tab on your income and expenses—if you are spending more, it is a warning sign. You can cut down spending or find ways to earn more. Similarly, a city must decide whether to reduce extraction in certain areas or improve recharge methods, such as rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, or preserving open spaces. So, does Bengaluru have enough groundwater monitoring systems? While a WELL Labs report estimates the city's groundwater consumption as 1,392 million litres a day (MLD), BWSSB’s groundwater outlook report states that the extraction is only 800 MLD. Odisha’s Jaga Mission upholds a model for empowering grassroots urban communities

The Jaga Mission shows the path to institutionalised, decentralised participatory governance through three main areas of intervention.

As Odisha’s Jaga Mission progressed, the vision expanded from developing slums into liveable habitats with the active participation of the community, to developing the upgraded slums as empowered units of hyperlocal self-governance. The highlights of participatory slum transformation were discussed in the first part of this series. Taking forward the idea of collaborative problem solving, the Mission now sought to put in place systems to institutionalise decentralised participatory governance in the upgraded slum neighbourhoods. The objective was to transfer the management of neighbourhoods, encompassing the 4 lakh slum households across 115 cities in the state, to the Slum Dwellers Associations…
