Not-so-Young Turk works to retain seat in Byatrayanapura

Incumbent MLA Krishna Byregowda is fighting the perception of not being accessible. 16 candidates are in the fray in this northern part of Bengaluru.

Byatarayanapura is a part of the Bangalore Urban District with around 3.1 lakh voters. It suffers from road infrastructure issues. Bus connectivity is also of concern to residents. Land encroachment is another troublesome issue. Bad roads have been a menace to this constituency. They’ve led to unbearable traffic and road accidents. Drinking water supply also remains inadequate. Reason being, borewells have gone dry.

The constituency consists of seven BBMP wards — Jakkur, Thanisandra, Byatarayanapura, Kodigehalli, Vidyaranyapura, Doddabommasandra and Kuvempunagar; as well as eight gram panchayats of Doddajalla, Chikkajalla, Hunsemaranahalli, Bagalur, Marenahalli, Sonappanahalli, Betta Halasooru, Bandi Kodigehalli; and three Zilla Panchayats of Betta Halasuru, Hunsemaranahalli, Bagalur.

A decade without a Master Plan: Who should be planning Bengaluru’s future?

Bengaluru’s future must focus on breaking free from outdated frameworks and embracing citizen-led, climate-resilient planning.

Nearly a decade ago, while I was working on the Revised Master Plan for Bengaluru (RMP 2031), a senior planner remarked: “Only the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) has the legal right to plan for Bengaluru.” Today, that assertion is unravelling in a tussle between the newly formed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the BDA over who should plan for the city’s future. What is more troubling is that Bengaluru’s current master plan, the RMP 2015, is based on surveys from 2003, nearly two decades out of date. The Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act (KTCPA) of 1961 requires revision every…
