Residents help manage factory fire

Alert residents helped put out a major fire in a plastic factory in Arekere

There was a major fire in Kleen Pack, a plastic factory off Bannerghatta Road, early morning on January 30th. I was leaving for my morning walk along with my wife at 5 am on the day, when I noticed black smoke rising up in the sky.

Abandoning our walk, we rushed to the direction of smoke to check what was happening. A lot of plastic/synthetic raw materials were stored in the factory’s premises and these were on fire. The factory manufactures plastic bags and is located along Arekere Bannerghatta road that leads to L&T South City.

By the time we reached, the fire had become major. The only fire engine which had reached the spot by then, could not control it.

I immediately alerted the fire force for additional engines and also informed ambulance service (to be on stand-by mode) and the police.

My wife took charge of directing fire engines from the main road to the spot (vehicles could not locate the spot due to power failure early morning). She also diverted other vehicles that were entering the road. Many call centre vehicles use this road as it connects Bannerghatta road to L & T South city and adjoining localities.

Meanwhile, I, with the help of security personnel of the apartment opposite the factory, tried to prevent tree branches from catching fire. We tried to stop burnt branches from falling on the road and damaging vehicles, until additional fire engines arrived and took control.

Finally with the help of eight fire engines the fire was brought under control at around 7.30 am and was completely doused by 9.30 am.

From resting place to industrial hub: The changing face of Bidadi

As the sleepy town near Bengaluru transitions from farmland to urban centre, farmers face lost livelihoods and an uncertain future.

In an earlier article, we explored how rural areas surrounding Bengaluru are affected due to the city's expansion. Here, we look at how Bidadi's transformation from a quiet agricultural area to an industrial hub affects the people who call it home. Nestled along the historic Bengaluru-Mysuru corridor in present-day Ramanagara district lies Bidadi, a town whose very name carries echoes of its past. Derived from the Kannada word “Bidara,” meaning a resting place, oral histories recount how the Maharaja of Mysuru once paused here during long journeys between the two cities. In those early years, Bidadi was defined not by…

The Saundarya story: Ahmedabad’s women-led cooperative presents alternative to modern gig work

Saundarya, a women's cooperative formed by organising marginalised informal workers, provides professional housekeeping services in the city.

Ten years back, Kamlaben Chavda was a stay-at-home mother of two children in the Gomtipur ward, at the far eastern end of Ahmedabad. Till one day, a neighbour and relative asked Kamlaben to accompany her to where she worked, the Saundarya Safai Utkarsh Mahila Sewa Sahakari Mandali Ltd. Today, thanks to that visit and the work she eventually found through Saundarya, Kamlaben says, “Now I have this experience where I can confidently go to any workplace and perform. And I can definitely say that I am standing where I am because of the support of my mandali (cooperative).”  Kamlaben is…
