MLA promises action at ST Bed layout

The residents of ST Bed Layout adjacent to Koramangala recently organised a public meeting with civic officials in the presence of their MLA, Ramalinga Reddy. Citizens noted many promises.

In one of the many public appearances that Ramalinga Reddy, MLA, (Congress-BTM Layout constituency) is making these days, he visited the ST Bed area on 21 June, Saturday. The residents of ST Bed area organised a meeting comprising of all the officers from the different government departments including the BBMP, BWSSB, BDA, Police, etc. The stage was decked with around a dozen people including the Reddy. Around a 100 people attended this meeting.

Before the meeting Reddy had already been visiting the area, since his victory in the elections. He recently inaugurated the asphalting of a few roads in Koramangala, in the 3rd Block, 6th Block, and more.

The meeting began with a letter complied by the residents of ST Bed, Friends Colony, Cauvery colony together describing the major problems of these areas.

The main problems involved undone roads that are in no condition to be used. While water supply, sanitation also were a cause of concern for many specially for people living in Friends colony. The MLA mentioned that a total of Rs.6 crores has been allotted for Koramangala and Ejjipura area for tarring.

Reddy appeared patient in listening to the grievances and answered queries while asking the officers in-charge to respond as well. But soon enough, the agitation in the public was visible and some citizens started shouting. People even reached the dias and crowded around it.

The major frustration: citizens wanted a time bound activity of development. To this Reddy said: "Work would be done in three weeks and if any officer is not cooperating or if the work is not happening then the public is free to call on my personal mobile number." He announced his number on the mike. (9480143777)

People were unsatisfied with the answers of M P Kishore, a technical manager and officer in-charge from the Karnataka Land Army Corporation(KLAC). He claimed to have cleared debris regularly from the roads and finishing the road constructions on time. To this, residents showed their disbelief and gave him examples of the Nirguna Mandir Road.

The residents repeatedly complained about the Shinivagalu Main Road, 4th Main, which is not in a good shape and is one of the most used roads. Along with that a lot of people complained that once the road construction finishes, the rocks and debris are left on the footpath only creating troubles for the people who have to walk through and for those who live nearby.

Reddy for his part, referred to major works currently being undertaken including storm water drains, drinking water supply, road asphalting and desilting of the storm water drains. He said that he is taking special interest in asphalting of roads and all the roads in the area will be done by the month of August. The BBMP medical officer for health for Kormangala, M Jayaprakash promised that the stray dog menace and mosquito trouble would be soon solved.

While the officers were repeating "madthini sir" (‘we will do it’), the MLA got annoyed. He asked them not to just nod their heads but show something in actions. He has asked the officers to get signatures from at least two households every street once the work is totally done and that the debris are removed.

Furthermore, some active citizen groups came up with additional issues like garbage clearance, and collection of garbage from the Maharaja Restaurant Junction which happens to be the entry to ST Bed area. As one enters, the first thing visible is the garbage dump.

Muralidhar Rao, a resident of Mantri Classic Apartments suggested that the whole process of garbage collection and dumping should be scientifically managed. Secondly he also pointed the hanging cables and wires posing a constant threat to the residents hence even that needs urgent attention.

To all this, MLA Reddy seemed very ambitious and accepted most of the suggestions. One of his personnel noted down each and every point made in the meeting. How much of the notes moves out of the notebook and comes to reality is for everyone to wait and watch.

Air quality deteriorates in Indian cities For the fifth consecutive day on December 20th, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) remained severe at 429. However, this was an improvement from the ‘severe plus’ AQI of 451 on December 19th, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It had been 445 the previous day. The AQI crossed this level on November 19th, reaching 460, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The IMD states that the severe AQI situation is primarily due to meteorological conditions, such as extremely calm winds that trap particulate matter and prevent pollutants from dispersing. On…

How a sustainable approach to hawking in Mumbai can help pedestrians and vendors

Hawkers are ubiquitous on Mumbai's streets. Effective solutions must address the root cause of space conflict between pedestrians and vendors.

Three days before I began writing this article, a bench of Bombay High Court judges criticised the BMC for its inaction in clearing hawkers from railway station areas across Mumbai while addressing a petition. Sadly, this isn't the first time the court has heard such a petition. A simple Google News search for "Bombay High Court hawkers" over the past 20 years brings up over 14,000 results, showing how often this issue has been raised. Recently, BEST also came under fire for removing buses from routes affected by hawker encroachments in Borivali. Clearly, the unregulated presence of hawkers is widely…
