Shopkeepers see drop in rakhi sales

A drop in sale of rakhis and a burglary at a retail outlet, south Bengaluru has had a dull week. Later this Sunday is a special fest at an apartment complex in the area.

Rakhi tales from the market places in Jayanagar

At Jayanagar 4th block, Subhramanyam, the owner of a dainty store is disheartened with the turnout for Raksha Bandhan. "I haven’t made many sales this year. There is a lot of variety and price ranges, but the turnout in the market is too less somehow."

When asked for the possible reasons for the disappointing sales, he opines, "There could be any number of reasons. The overall turnout in the market itself is dropping of course. But it could also be that the interest in Rakhi itself is waning. Girls used to spend half an hour to forty-five minutes buying a bunch of Rakhis a few years ago. Now it seems they are always in a hurry."

BBMP started the construction of two new storm water drains in Shakambarinagar ward on August 26. The drains will be built from Adarsha apartment up till Saraki Road. Total cost of the project is Rs 3 crores. "The drains will avoid flooding in the area. We plan to complete the work in three months," said Munikrishna, Chief Engineer, Storm Water Drain (South).

As far as the merchants’ woes are concerned, Varna, a B.Tech graduate says, "Oh, they’ll have to get creative, the makers. The Rakhis were the same last year and the year before that…especially in make, design and materials. I know that these are traditional designs, but I think there is more to traditional art than what these wholesale markets are concentrating on."
