Purva Sunshine residents get Khata
In 2010, few residents of Purva Sunshine (PSS) decided to submit their Khata applications together. It turned out to be a long journey of 3 years which ended in availing individual khata documents for 66 of them on March 1st 2014. Some key points and achievements:
• This was the ‘The Khata’ certificate, not the temporary B-Khata.
• Constant follow-ups in groups of 8-10 residents and ensuring Kannada speaking residents were actively involved.
• Two press releases were made during initial stages to create awareness and get input from other apartments and experts.
• No bribe, no agents Involved.
• No short-cut approach via MP, MLA, Corporator or any political support. No road-blocking, no dharna, no anti-social act.
• No RTI, no paid legal consultants.

Divyasree Elan’s SWM journey
Divyasree Elan, an apartment community with 380 households, rolled out its waste segregation program in Feb 2013 in order to reduce the amount of rejects t0 <10%. Following measures were introduced:
1. 3 way segregation (bio-degradable, recyclable and reject)
2. In house installation of Organic Waste Converter to process the bio-degradable waste and
3. Secondary segregation of dry waste to ensure proper recycling.
Many residents initially resisted closure of garbage chutes and collection mechanism without garbage bags. Colour coded bins with pictorial labels were distributed to collect different kinds of waste. Elan’s facility management played a key role in this program. They helped in procuring bins, helping in organizing the campaign for residents and training the housekeeping staff. Now, out of around 430Kg of waste being generated every day at Elan, around 280 kg is being composted and 120Kgs are recycled. Only the remaining 30-35Kg goes to the landfill.
