10 years ago, Meenakshi Kumaran, a resident of Madurai, got married in a grand ceremony. Her parents not only bore the cost of the wedding but also gifted her 100 sovereigns ( 1 sovereign = 8 grams) of jewellery. That was only about 1/10th of the property of her father, though. Today, Meenakshi is penniless. Her extravagant and alcoholic husband who recently died had long sold off her jewels. After her father passed away a few years ago, her brother took over his property and refuses to give Meenakshi her legitimate share. And on her part, having grown up in a…

Drawing inspiration from protests in New Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, hundreds of women sat in protest against anti-Muslim citizenship laws, on a road in South Mumbai's Nagpada since the night of January 26 around 11 PM - in what came to be called Mumbai Bagh. Although the protests were suspended in the wake of the COVID19 outbreak, they continued symbolically. Today, the protest site on Morland Road near Hotel Arbia has pictures of women leaders and has only one slogan on placard "hum kal yaha the" (we were here yesterday). The site where anti CAA protests were held pre-lockdown. Photo: Santoshee…

Until about four months back, if one were to walk through the small by-lanes of the Savda Ghevra resettlement colony in North-west Delhi, it was common to find women sitting at their doorsteps alone or in groups, assembling toys from sacks of colourful plastic pieces. Others would be deftly cutting out sandal straps from long rubber sheets and bunching them up in sets of a dozen pairs each, while again others would be doing intricate bead work in a manner that seemed almost effortless. With the onset of COVID-19 and subsequent lockdown measures announced to curb spread, they can no…

It is a bright morning. My mind is filled with optimism and plans, even as I watch my mother carry on with the daily chores all by herself. Almost all of the work that goes into running the household is performed by my mother; others in the family do not share the load. A profound sensitivity dawns, catalyzed by my own consciousness and on realizing that the entire work is performed by the only woman in a family of five for the house to even function. After completing all the regular chores, she sat down and that is when I…

For all outward appearances, Neelam (name changed to protect identity) has it all - a working husband, a couple of young and bright children, and a good job for herself. Look deeper, and one finds that her husband is an alcoholic who abuses her regularly.  Not having got his supply of booze since the lockdown started, he has become even more unbearable, screaming and shouting at her for little or no reason... He has also been encouraging their children to abuse her verbally.  Neelam is now worried that, with the government allowing sale of liquor, his abuse may take another…

On March 2, women from several walks of life assembled at Jayanagar’s Kittur Rani Chennamma stadium and used their art to oppose sexual violence against women and gendered minorities. Organised by several women’s and civil rights organisations, the ‘Aman Chowk’ or Peace Square meet, was in line with One Billion Rising (OBR), a UN campaign aimed at stifling sexual violence against women.
