On December 30, 2018, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) issued a public notice declaring all 198 BBMP wards ‘open defecation free’. It was approved by the BBMP council on December 27, 2018, three days prior to the distribution of the notice. Citizens of Tamil Nadu will start the new year without plastic, thanks to the state government's decision to impose a ban on plastic. Bannerghatta Road is already a mess, as one-third of the road is blocked for the work on the Metro. Come January 1, 2019, the Tamil Nadu government will implement a blanket ban on single use plastic, an unprecedented move in the state, aimed at protecting the environment.
