City news that mattters

  • Bangalore is now officially Bengaluru! In addition to Bengaluru, 11 other cities in Karnataka, including Mysore (Mysuru), Hubli (Hubballi) and Tumkur (Tumkuru), have undergone the name change. The Karnataka Chief Secretary, Kaushik Mukherjee says there is no compulsion on private firms and organisations to change their registered names.

  • BBMP gets a pat on its back from the Centre for its efforts in tackling garbage at a one-day conference on waste and water management.

  • Viral conjunctivitis, more commonly known as Madras Eye, seems to be doing the rounds in the city. Doctors advise those infected to stay at home, so as to minimise spread of infection.

  • During the hearing of a PIL on open drains, the BBMP counsel, strangely said he was not given the documents by the BBMP, while the Commissioner claimed they were given four days before the hearing.

  • Race course Turf Club has been given three more years of time to shift from the city centre.

» Looks like the BBMP is finally taking the issue of encroachments seriously. Around one acre of land was reclaimed at Allasandra Lake at a demolition drive on October 20th.
