Waste Water Treatment and Reuse
Mr. Ravi Iyer’s initiative to use an economical waste water treatment should be an inspiration to many. He has implemented a simple planted gravel filter based waste water treatment system for his home at SJR redwoods which is capable of treating approximately 200-300 litres of household waste water every day. This family has hence reduced their daily demand of fresh water as the treated water can now be used for landscaping. Report of ‘Nali Kali’ workshop @Kaikondrahalli Lake
20th September, 2014
Hasiru Dala and Mythri Sarva Seva Samithi with the support of Global Communities Partners for Good organized ‘Nali Kali’ (Fun & Learn) workshop for children at Kaikondanahalli Lake, Sarjapura Road. The theme of the workshop was to learn good practices of waste management. More than 270 children from nearby schools i.e. Kaikondrahalli High School and Iblur Government Primary School and residential complexes participated in it.
The plastic monster at KKH Lake
The event began with the story of ‘Plastic Monster’- which was narrated by C. Krishnan Subramanian – Founder of ‘theyellowbag’ initiative, Chennai. Mr. Subramanian dressed up in waste plastic bags explained how the plastic is choking the entire ecosystems across the world. The workshop was participatory and the participants who gave accurate answers to Mr. Subramanian’s queries were awarded with cloth bags.
Anu Govind from Daily Dump explained ways to compost different kinds of wet waste in her session ‘Kachra Ka Dabra’. She also helped children learn various ways to recycle dry waste which can be used as packaging material.
A tasty snack of bananas and lemonade in steel cups was served to the participants.
Nalini Shekar, Executive Director, Hasiru Dala anchored the event. And the event was concluded with the national anthem.

Unpainted medians at ORR – Fatally dangerous
Poorly painted medians on the split flyovers on Outer ring road are a cause for concern and have claimed many lives in the recent past. Numerous pleas from a techie Akhil Deshpande and his friends to paint the central median between the Devarabeesanahalli flyover and the service road on Outer Ring Road, or to install a reflective bollard to caution motorists fell on deaf ears of the Bangalore Traffic police.
On September 3rd, another fatal accident at the same spot spurred the techies to take action by installing a red and white reflective box atop the central median at the end of the Devarabeesanahalli flyover. Eventually a hazard sign was also put up by the authorities. They have decided to go further and have started a drive to make the road medians better starting from Silk Board to Marathahalli. There is plan to extend this drive to other areas as well.

Miscellaneous updates from GGL and Ibblur lake
Fencing work on the Ibblur Lake resumed last week after a close follow up done by Save Ibblur Forum. While the work did resume initially, everything came to a halt the very same evening as important materials went missing from the area. The efforts to find them are underway. Residents recall this lake to be a beautiful haven for migratory birds till 2009 after which everything changed. In present day, Ibblur Lake is nothing but a mossy lake of stagnation. This renewed interest in the lake will bring a ray of hope to the residents around it.
On the other hand, road work on the ORR-GGL stretch is finally showing signs of revival with fresh layers of gravel being dumped in mounds along the 300 metre stretch which is an irritant for all the residents there.
