Issues in the zone:
- Poor civic amenities in many slums in the zone are a persistent issue. Residents of Kallukuttai slum have decided to boycott the civic polls on account of not having basic facilities despite living in the area for nearly four decades. They demand better roads, drainage facilities and solutions to water shortage in the summer months.
- Many roads of Srinivasa Nagar have been left out of the stormwater drain project that has been initiated in the Kovalam basin. The network has not been integrated with the larger SWD project in the area, leaving many residents worried about its effect.
- Milling of roads has not been done when roads were relaid in Kamaraj Nagar. This has led to an increase in the height of the roads, despite an order from the government to carry out milling as the first step in road relaying.
- Poor roads are an issue in many parts of the zone. Arterial roads such as Corporation Road are ridden with potholes. The commuters who use these roads to access the residential areas and schools and hospitals are affected by frequent road laying working and digging that takes place for repairs.
- Pollution of Perungudi lake is an issue that has not seen many solutions. The National Green Tribunal has raised the issue of contamination of water in the lake and highlighted a lack of concrete plans to fix the same.
- Shrinking Pallikaranai marshland and persistent pollution is a key issue that has remained unaddressed despite crores being spent on the area. The nearby landfill is also affecting the ecological balance of the area.
- Micro plastics have been found contaminating the groundwater near the dumpyard in Perungudi. Despite steps such as biomining, the dumpyard remains a source of concern for residents in the surrounding areas.
