Bengaluru is included alongside 75 of the biggest cities of the world in a survey of global youth. Your response could help Bengaluru be a more livable city.
Over the last two decades, Bengaluru has witnessed rapid growth of urbanisation. This has also brought a plethora of formidable challenges for the city, such as traffic congestion, urban sprawl, poor infrastructure and a perceived lack of basic facilities such as drinking water, Solid and Liquid Waste Disposal. It is very unfortunate that, although Bengaluru has transformed into an internationally known metropolis and mostly known to the world as the Silicon Valley of Asia, it still lacks a good provisioning of public services which are the prerequisite for a city and its inhabitants.
This problem has prompted a serious debate among policy makers, citizens and other stakeholders on the future of the city. This can be seen in the several community-led initiatives in Bengaluru where the citizens have raise a collective voice against various social issues plaguing their city like garbage and potholes, through public action either in a form of “Spot Fixing” in different parts of the city or even some artists have vented their anger by some wonderful art and play. In such a scenario, it is very important to build a sustainable infrastructure for Bengaluru in the future.
YouthfulCities is conducting the Urban Attitudes Survey in Bengaluru to ask its young people what’s most important to them in their city, and gives them the opportunity to express how their city is doing across 20 critical urban attributes in the broad themes of Live, Work, and Play. YouthfulCities is a social enterprise leading a unique urban regeneration, a reservoir of youth-centered urban knowledge in the world. And the goal is to get that knowledge to the right people—connecting youth, governments and change makers to drive lasting change. Youthful Cities wants to be the catalyst for boosting prosperity and happiness for all citizens of the world’s 100 biggest cities by 2025, including Bengaluru!
The idea is to reveal the top priorities of Bengaluru’s young people and provide key insights into what makes their city youthful. It also helps to identify the gap between the priorities and perceptions of urban youth. Through this gap analysis, we will understand where the biggest opportunities and needs exist for youth in each of our cities. Our survey aims to bring forth the urgent need for the government, municipal bodies and the citizens to think about how are we going to hand on the Bengaluru city to the next generation!
Municipal strategists, policy makers, civic and business leaders in cities around the world are beginning to recognise youth as their city’s greatest assets. Youth are the world’s largest untapped resource, filled with unlimited potential—and the secret ingredient to driving our cities’ competitive edge, stimulating development, and finding new solutions to pressing urban problems. Yes! Now, it is time to bring our voice to the table. Let’s set the Urban Agenda for the future of Bengaluru. All we’re asking for is 10 minutes of your time. In exchange we promise to continue pushing for better more youthful cities to live, work and play!
