Govindarajan is the president of the Federation of Tambaram Residents' Association and a social worker. He started his philanthropic activities at the age of 18 by starting a youth-led organisation called WAY (Welfare Association of Youth) involved in organising blood donation, leprosy and eye check-up camps in and around Tambaram.

In recent monsoons, as heavy rains battered Chennai, causing floods and damage, many residents grew frustrated with the government's emergency call centres. Calls often went unanswered or were handled by outsourced agents unfamiliar with local issues.
