All about Mumbai North candidates: Controversial sitting MP faces actor Urmila Matondkar

Mumbai North constituency has seen the BJP and INC come to power twice each in the past four terms. In 2004 it had witnessed veteran BJP leader Ram Naik lose to Bollywood actor and INC candidate Govinda. The INC are trying to use that same formula, as they field former Bollywood actor Urmila Matondkar against incumbent BJP MP Gopal Shetty.

Mumbai North constituency is comprised of seven assembly constituencies: Borivali, Dhaisar, Magathane, Kandivali East, Charkop, and Malad West. The constituency has seen the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) come to power twice each in the last four terms. This is the constituency where Bollywood actor Govinda, representing the INC, defeated veteran politician and current governor of Uttar Pradesh Ram Naik. The INC is attempting the same formula for these elections by fielding Bollywood actress Urmila Mathondkar from the constituency.

The Election Commission of India ( ECI ) has accepted nominations of 18 candidates; and rejected that of three. One candidate has withdrawn his candidacy.

Urmila Matondkar (INC)

Matondkar is a former Bollywood actor who started her career as a child actor in the 80s. She gained wide popularity and was considered one of the leading actors of Hindi cinema in the 90s. If she wins, she will win join a list of Bollywood female actors who have held seats such as Jaya Prada, Hema Malini and Kiron Kher.

While the constituency has previously seen Bollywood actor Govind win by defeating veteran politician Ram Naik; sitting MP and rival BJP candidate Gopal Shetty, however, seems unfazed and  has stated that Urmila is “Bholi Bhali Ladki ” and zero in politics.

Issues faced in the constituency

Activists have alleged that several open public spaces in Borivali -Kandivali belt  have been encroached upon by trusts and organizations. They state that these spaces were built by Gopal Shetty when he was an MLA using MLA funds, but the authorities haven’t claimed it back. They claim the trusts and organizations that have encroached these spaces are connected to Shetty.

Residents of a Ganapat Patil Nagar, a slum community in Dahisar assembly constituency are planning on pressing the NOTA option as none of the political parties have been able to solve their issues. There are around 10,000 settlements and 15,000 eligible voters in the community, who have no  access to water and electricity. They have to rely on the electricity and water mafia for access at high rates. They state that it only prior to  elections that politicians visit them, make promises which they don’t keep.

A 2018 survey titled All India Survey on Governance Issues and Voting Behaviour by Association for Democratic Reforms found that residents of Mumbai North stated drinking water(50 %), better employment opportunities(41.28%), better roads(41.11) as the three most important requirements in the constituency.
