Kolkata Uttar: BJP fights to unseat two-time MP from Trinamool

Incumbent MP from Trinamool Congress Sudip Bandyopadhyay faces still challenge from Rahul Sinha who finished second at this north Kolkata constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. A complete overview of all candidates here

Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency comprises the following assembly constituencies: Chowranghee, Entally, Beleghata, Jorasanko, Shyampukur, Maniktala, Kashipur and Belgachhia. The constituency came into being after a delimitation exercise in 2008. The two Lok Sabha elections contested since have seen candidates of the Trinamool Congress (AITC) emerge as the victor.

A total of 21 candidates are contesting from various political parties and as independents from Kolkata Uttar parliamentary constituency.

According to the CEO, West Bengal, the constituency has a total voter strength of 14,43,818 — 794275 male, 649528 female and 15 of other gender.

Sudip Bandyopadhyay is the incumbent MP from Kolkata Uttar. He had served as MP for two consecutive terms, having been been elected in both 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. Prior to being elected to the Lok Sabha he has served as MLA for four terms. He has served as the leader of the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

Kaninika Bose (Ghosh) has been fielded by the CPI(M) as its candidate from Kolkata Uttar. Rahul Sinha contested from the Kolkata Uttar constituency in the 2014 elections as well, finishing second behind the Trinamool Congress. He served as the President of the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party between 2009-2015 and helped establish the presence of the party at the grassroots.
