2017 has been an eventful year that has made the unique identity card, Aadhaar, all the more important, with the government insisting on linking Aadhaar to everything, right from banks to Permanent Account Numbers to investments, insurances, health benefits, driving licences and phones.
It has also been a year in which there has been little good news on the right to privacy and data breaches in relation to Aadhaar. There have been many alleged data breaches on which not much information is available.
As the year comes to an end, we find more and more non-governmental agencies and businesses, right from mobile wallets to social media websites, asking for Aadhaar linkages. The Supreme Court is yet to rule on right to privacy and Aadhaar, and it remains to be seen whether the Aadhaar enforcement will be smoother and safer with adequate checks in place.
