Chandni Chowk: Union Minister from BJP faces a new challenger from Congress

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister from BJP faces JP Agarwal of Congress who has contested unsuccessfully from East Delhi.

Chandni Chowk Parliamentary constituency comprises 10 assembly constituencies: Adarsh Nagar, Shalimar Bagh, Shakur Basti, Tri Nagar, Wazirpur, Model Town, Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk, Matia Mahal and Ballimaran. The constituency came into existence in its current form after a delimitation exercise in 1993 and 2008. So far, two Lok Sabha elections held in 2009 and 2014 have seen winners from the Congress and BJP respectively.  

A total of 26 candidates are contesting from political parties and as independents from Chandni Chowk. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has rejected  29 applications for the constituency for various reasons.

According to the ECI website, the constituency has a total of 15,62,268   voters.

The incumbent MP from BJP is up for reelection in Chandni Chowk. Dr Harsh Vardhan was the CM candidate of the BJP in the 2013 elections. He has been elected MLA four times form the Krishna Nagar constituency.

Jai Prakash Agarwal (Indian National Congress)

Jai Prakash Agarwal is the INC candidate from Chandni Chowk. He has previously served as MP of North East Delhi in 2009. He lost the Lok Sabha elections from North East Delhi to BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari during his releection bid in 2014.

Pankaj Gupta (Aam Aadmi Party)

Pankaj Gupta is the AAP candidate from Chandni Chowk. He is the party secretary and also a member of the party’s political affiars committee, a key decision-making body. This is his first contest in the Lok Sabha polls. An engineer by profession, he had a successful career in the field efore transitioning to politics in 2012 with the Aam Aadmi Party.
